Could you really develop a friendship with a chatbot?

I think it would be impossible really. You might like talking with the chatbot, and even grow to depend on them to a certain extent, but the chatbot is incapable of reciprocating your feelings. I am rembering the movie You with Joaquin Phoenix where he is in love with Siri. Of course, it leads to an unhappy ending. You are talking to non human after all. However, at some point in the future, Chatbots will become more and more indistinguishable from humans and may develop some emotions.
Also, if people end up using them in their homes like robots, it would be really tempting to humanize them, and make them more like real companions. What are your thoughts on the whole human robot connection?

Maybe. If you are lonely and in need of a friend, who knows? That would be interesting though.

I am sure you would end up liking the bot more than they like you. You are just a number for lack of a better word to them..a human.

if I ever tried to.

@snowy22315 Of course, but what matters is how you feel about it. You can't control how others feel about you, not even a robot. Interesting.

Me personally, I'm not for it. I do have a friend who has gotten caught up with chatbot (they are curiously talking to an anime character
). This person says it's just for fun - but they sure are spending a lot of time on it
. I have heard about robots keeping lonely seniors company . . . I get that, but I don't ever want to get to that point - I NEED human interaction - person to person.

I know an older guy who is big into AI. I suspect it is mostly for the companionship aspects. I think he is thinking about writing a book with it though.

If you were communicating with one for awhile it would be interesting to ask it what it thought of you.

Yeah, probably less so now than it was then. The Robin Williams movie AI could
Be a reality in 10-20 years.

Most bots are capable of telling jokes, and are very thorough in their answers.

@cabuyogty Oh yeah, of course..you know there are real people behind the typed messages, and if you are on here enough..you feel like you have a pretty good sense of who the person is, or at least what they want to show you.
