My Mystery Child

When my youngest son was born, I brought him home in a couple of weeks. I stayed at my husband's sister for a while until it was good to take him home. My good friend waited for me at the house. I let her hold him while I unpacked some stuff. I set down a card with his footprints taken at the hospital. She looked at his bare foot and at the footprints and said that they do not match. Fine, thanks, Helen. I kept comparing the footprints and wondering. Then I remembered that a nurse lived nearby and the family was mad at us because they thought we cut down trees on their property to get to our place. That was not true. That nurse was my nurse in the hospital. I wondered if she could have switched babies in the nursery to avenge their honor, or whatever. My imagination went wild. It does not matter. I loved my mystery baby too much to find out. Maybe someday the truth will come out. Do you have any mysteries in your family? Did you ever have any doubts about anyone in your family?

I am sure he must be my son. If not, he is the son of my heart. I was quite ill when pregnant for him and they did not know if we would survive. I was in isolation because of my blood pressure and I don't remember seeing him in the hospital for the first couple of days.

I sure hope it was really your baby. From generation to generation my family had passed along the possibility of being in contact with the world beyond. So I have seen, heard, and felt many amazing things and still do.

He was much smaller than my other kids were. The firstborn was small too. I am 99% sure he is my kid. But, the other one percent does not know that.

He is all grown up now. I have loved and cared for him through his childhood and still do when I can.

@akalinus but the thought of inquiring back at the hospital didn't cross your mind when he was just a new-born?

I'm sure he's your son. Surely nobody would switch a baby on purpose, no matter what the provocation.

@akalinus Even without watching soap operas strange things happen all the time. No imagination required.

When the kids were little, I watched soap operas.I think I was influenced by them because strange things happened all the time. I also have a writer's imagination.

@DaddyEvil There are many things I cannot explain. Some are mysterious, and others are just beyond my understanding.

I would hope it was more likely that the nurse gave you footprints of some other baby. I hope that was the case.

I tried to compare the foot with the prints but I could not tell. If my friend had not spoken those words, I would not have doubted.

Really? the child you brought home might have been switched? You didn't inquire at the hospital?

I knew from an early age that I was adopted and hated by all except my parents.
