Could They Have Finally Found the Identity of Jack the Ripper?

The Jack the Ripper debate may be over. One that historians and true crime enthusiasts have been entwined with for 137 years. Between the months of August and November in the year 1888 five women were brutally murdered on the streets of an area of London called Whitechapel. The murders were marked by extreme violence. Three of the victims had their internal organs removed. A shawl that was a key piece of evidence from the killing of Catherine Eddowes, one of the five murdered women, was sold in 2007 to a man named Edwards., a long-time researcher of the case. DNA testing began and blood found on the shawl matched a descendant of Eddowes. Also, the semen found was linked to a man named Kosminski. Edwards is now asking that authorities recognize Kosminski as the true Jack the Ripper. Also, relatives of the victims are demanding that Scotland Yar reopen the case. Edwards feels that the DNA evidence is sufficient cause to legally name Kosminski as the person who killed the five women in 1888. What is known about Aaron Kosminski: * He was a Polish immigrant who moved to England with his family. * He worked as a barber in Whitechapel at the time of the murders. * Records show he was suffering from mental illness. He showed symptoms of schizophrenia and paranoia. * He was committed to multiple insane asylums. * He suffered from both hearing voices and auditory hallucinations. * He refused to eat or bathe before his death at age 53 in 1919. What are your thoughts on this? I hope Edwards is able to get Scotland Yard to reopen the case. I think this is ample evidence to do so.

Yes, I've seen some articles regarding this. I wonder if they truly found him. Wasn't there news about finding him before though? Maybe not.

I don't recall. There was something about the shawl some time back after Edwards bought it.

He could be the guy but there are so many other theories I wonder if they'll ever really know. I have an interesting book written about Jack the Ripper and it tells about all the crimes and the theories,

@celticeagle so many people have probably handled that over the years they could say the evidence was planted or tampered with but I think it’s likely they did finally find the killer.

@shaggin .......But forensics could show otherwise. And, Edwards only spoke of those two DNAs found.

I saw a short series about that too a few years ago. I find it fascinating. They have proof if Scotland Yard will just verify it. DNA doesn't lie.

That is really interesting. I would love to see if he can get the case to be reopened with this evidence. So many years later no one would likely be alive who knew any of the women but descents of them would have answers finally solved. It definitely sounds like he could be the killer.

The closure of this case would give all five families the closure they have been seeking for many years.

I hadn't heard about the new evidence. But it doesn't make a difference except to end the case now

I think it does make a big difference. This was a famous case that went unsolved for over 100 years. To finally bring closure to the families would be wonderful.

@celticeagle But there is so many present cases to be solved that it just draws resources away from those

If they close this case what will they write about? (That's a joke really)

It's been nearly 20 years since Edwards bought the shawl. You'd think there would be some news on Scotland Yard's stance by now.
