"Freckleface Strawberry" Being Banned

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore published a children's book entitled "Freckface Strawberry" in 2007. It is about a seven-year-old girl who is dealing with her insecurities concerning her freckles. She finally accepts them as part of her unique identity. Moore was shocked to learn recently that her book had been banned by the Trump administration. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) which provides education to military families worldwide, have it on their list of banned books. The school did release a statement that no materials have been permanently removed because the review is still ongoing. As we have learned back on January 26, 2025, the newly appointed Defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, announced that the Department of Defense would comply with the executive order set down by President Trump ending all DEI programming, shutting down DEI programs and their offices in the federal government. The DoDEA has 67,000 students and 160 schools worldwide. Other books affected are "No Truth Without Ruth" about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and "Becoming Nicole" about a transgender actor. A February 5 mandate ordered the removal of all books containing "gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology." Teachers were all instructed to remove all books, remove pronouns from email signatures and cancel all cultural observations such as Black History Month.
