It's not Christmas but....

Daughter gave me a wonderful Gurney book. He's the artist who dreamed up the Dinotopia universe. Sweet inspiring artist. Textbook is what the Gurney book is. I grabbed some old typing paper and a pen and attempted to draw the outline of a house. It actually kind of sort of had the look of oh- a barn- but hey, for a person who only draws stick figures, it was impressive. I actually had fun so I went on to draw bubblegum rounds that kind of looked like marshmallows. More fun. I'm known for being a poet and short story writer and like I said, a master at stick figures. Daughter is the artist, the one who can look at a dog and in ten minutes, have a portrait of that dog. Today daughter's gift arrived. Oh just wow. She sent me a sketchbook and a metal case of graphite pencils and two charcoal sticks. My own sketchbook. Never had one. Always journals. Journals to write in. I've dared to write the word POETRY in cursive on the first page of the sketchbook. Cursive is an art form. Forming beautiful flowing letters on a page is plenty of practice for my fingers. Anyway, its a new form of fun and another way to stay connected to my daughter.

I've never heard of a gurney book before. That sounds really interesting. So basically you just trace a shape already in the book on a piece of paper? Is this a type of craft?

@lillacskies The author of the book is James Gurney. No way would I trace a shape- except maybe if I was goofing around with a cookie cutter. I look at drawings in the book and find elements- a house, for instance, that maybe I can imitate. Maybe. For instance I also saw pumpkins stacked in one of the drawings. I tried to sketch them. I kind of drew something funky but it was me and not just another stick figure. I hope this helps you understand me.

@sallypup Yes, I understand much better now. If there is something you must know about me, it's that I'm super dumb. I apologize. Haha I understand much better now. You and your daughter are very creative.

What a thoughtful gift and something that will bring you a lot of joy and satisfaction. Having a creative outlet is such a fulfilling part of life. I am trying to get some of mine back, grief has really messed with me but i am starting to fight back.
