No Water

Last night around 5pm our water was turned off. Of course, I tried to reach someone about when it would be turned back on as this was unexpected. At about 8pm we got a text from the complex telling us the water would be turned off until further notice. Someone’s pipes broke, but they didn’t have a shut off valve for that unit. Thus, they had to completely turn off the water for 3 buildings, including mine. It’s 9:15am with no updates so I went out and bought three gallons of water. That was all two stores had. I can shower at my dad’s, but I want the water to flush the toilet and wash my hands. Hopefully, this is fixed soon. What is the last plumbing problem you’ve experienced?

I don’t even see how that can be legal or to code

I wondered about that too (I actually have a call in to Housing about it), and then my blood pressure went up when I found out this morning the part they need is at Home Depot, and the maintenance man can fix it. They could have fixed that easily last night, but since it was after hours they were too lazy to do it. We were “assured” it would be fixed by 1pm today.

Here, they would have had to put everyone up in alternative accommodations for the night because it's not deemed habitable.

I hope they get the plumbing fixed soon at your apartment complex. They really should have let you know they were shutting the water off as soon as they did it. We had to call a plumber a few months ago when the pipes in our kitchen sink sprang a leak. We could hear a steady small-sounding stream under the sink. The plumber came, cut a big hole in the flooring under the sink and replaced the pipes... But didn't fix the hole in the flooring. *sigh* When OACAC came in to evaluate the work needed to weatherize our house, the hole in the floor was one of the things they said they'd fix. They have a list of things they're planning to do this next Spring to help reduce our heating and cooling bills.

@AmbiePam We also qualified for Section 8 for the house we live in now. They'll pay almost $400 of out monthly rent.

We just fixed a broken pipe that leads to our boiler. Until that was fixed we could not water the terrace garden as keeping the connection on would mean water flowing out from the broken pipe. We closed the valve until the pipe was replaced.

That is a real pain. I don't have water in my bathroom sink because it was leaking in our basement. But it is very minor and we will get it fixed eventually. I have had no electricity for 5 days and for me that means no water since we have a well. Its a drag for sure.

@AmbiePam Being without water is very difficult. Is it very cold there? Our two inches of snow and ice are starting to melt.

I get clogs in my toilets rather frequently it seems. I really need to get a plumber out here, but of course I don't want to spend the money! It's really not fair your complex makes y'all live with 3rd world problems. Did you ever get the heat issue resolved? Aye Carumba!

Oh, the water heater? No, it still doesn’t work. We got word this morning the water should be turned back on by 1pm today. What makes me angry is that this morning the manager said the part they need is at Home Depot, and maintenance could fix it. That means they could have fixed it last night, but it was after hours, and they were too lazy to do it.

@AmbiePam I know you don't want to have a problem with housing, but maybe you could anonymously call Landlord Tenant relations office maybe through legal aid but possibly a seperate entity and get some feedback about what your options are. Withholding hot water for a prolonged period of time doesn't even sound legal honestly.

@snowy22315 I think we might be getting a new manager soon, and if we do, I’m going to give it another go since she might respond correctly to the very first work order. I just kept getting someone who didn’t want to replace it when I needed a new one.

Hope the water comes back on soon! Oh geez - first there was a drain clog at my mom's . . . then last week we had a drain clog in our bathroom sink. It was too deep so we had to call in a plumber.

Oh, that's so frustrating. I hope they make getting the broken pipe(s) fixed a priority and get your water turned back on in a reasonable amount of time. A few years back there were a bunch of ongoing problems with the sewer lines in our half of the complex. We were the lucky ones in that scenario, though... our downstairs toilet was just slow to flush, but the unit on the other end next to the street actually had theirs overflow and flood their ground floor multiple times. The (now former) owners had Roto-Rooter out to clean out the line so many times. It always ended up being a temporary fix, because the root cause of the issue was the trees by the street. Once they took the trees out it finally stopped. Of course, they ground the stumps of all the trees down and replaced them with new saplings... and with the fact that the two on our side of the complex seem to be growing much better than the ones on the other side I strongly suspect that we're going to be seeing more issues with roots getting into that connection in the not-so-distant future.

Wow that certainly is inconvenient especially having to deal with it being turned off without notice as well as not knowing when it will be back on. My son is here doing work upstairs and one of the projects is my daughters bathroom, He's putting down a new floor and had to pull the toilet so our water was off most of the afternoon. It was hard enough dealing without water for a few hours let alone all the time you've been without your water. Hope they can get those broken pipes fixed quickly and get your water back on.

They fixed it about three hours ago. Unfortunately, an hour ago they turned it back off after they found another burst pipe. They said they’re working on it.

I would imagine that not having water violates the health code and they should have put everyone up in another location until a repair could be done. I hope that by now it is repaired, and you are back home safe and sound or at your father's place.

Another Mylotter said where she is, it’s actually required to put you up in a motel overnight. I had no idea, and I wonder if they got away with violating code, like you said. I’m looking into that. The water came back on about an hour ago, thank goodness.

@AmbiePam I am very thankful that the water is back on. Water is considered a basic necessity, and therefore, cannot be denied. Is there a boil only advisory?

I called Housing first thing yesterday morning, but they never called back. I’m pretty sure they only work half a day on Fridays. Last night they turned it off again due to another busted pipe, but fixed it for good around 8pm. My dad has told me if it happens again - overnight with no water - I should go to the local news station. They probably wouldn’t do a story, but they might make a few calls to make the managers nervous.

That sucks. When my grandparents had an apartment complex, we had to do something and we shut the water off for a few hours and told no one to flush lol, well someone did as the plumber had the pipe open and it was not good.

Definitely frustrating! Having no water for that long and without any clear updates – that is inconvenience! At least you were able to grab some water, but it was crazy that stores already had them low. Hopefully they get it fixed soon! I had leakage issues last year as well as during summer we had water scarcity. I would wake up early just to finish my morning routines and bath so that I can go to office without much hurdles. I used to wake up at 4 in morning to get the things going. It was a tough time last summer and I do have my fear for this summer. Take care!
