This Assignment is Driving Me Bonkers!

I decided to go back to school last spring. This semester one of the courses I'm taking is Programming for Network Administrators, which covers both Python and PowerShell. It's a foundational class, so it doesn't require any previous programming knowledge. The problem I'm running into is that I've been taking extra courses outside of my current major for fun. Last semester, that included Introductory Programming and Python... so the entirety of this course so far has been a combination of review and seeing real-world applications for what I've already learned. It's great! I love it! This week's assignment has us importing a CSV file and manipulating the data in it. Easy! Straightforward! But. The instructions are very clear about the steps we have to take to accomplish the end goal. They make perfect sense for evaluating how students are picking up the concepts that were discussed this week. From a coding standpoint, it's ridiculously complicated! There's nifty tricks in place to deal with CSV files in Python... but I can't utilize them. Assignments where we're given an end goal and told to reach it however we please are so much better than this.

Good luck with your assignment. I'm too ignorant to understand any of the technical terms you mentioned.

@Dreamerby Associate's of Applied Science right now, but only because my school's Bachelor's program hasn't officially been announced yet. It should be starting next fall, and it's a Bachelor of Science degree.

Thanks! It's not that bad, just a very convoluted way to get the end result.

Looks like you are really enjoying the learning process although this particular assignment is a bit of frustrating one! It is great that you already have got hold of Python and looking to excel there. I can also see how being forced to follow a rigid, step by step techniques instead of more efficient techniques could feel limiting. I have also been there. Structured assignments like the one you are having are probably made for those who are new to programming. Perhaps the idea is to grasp logic before moving to shortcuts. I totally agree with you on able to approach problem in our way and that would make things mor engaging and rewarding, and a great learning experience. Hopefully, assignments in future will give you that liberty to upgrade your skills!
