I am so fascinated by old murder mysteries.I watched 5 YouTube videos about the Black Dahlia case last night. Her young life and her murder is still very compelling. Elizabeth Short sure had an interesting life. She died at age 22. The Los Angeles newspaper people or friends of hers gave her the name "The Black Dahlia" because of her dark hair and the black lace dresses she liked to wear. The name was taken from a 1946 movie "The Blue Dahlia". How horrible to be found in a field cut in half, no blood, disemboweled and disfigured. There were 75 suspects just after the detectives on the case had been on it for only a couple of months. A couple of years later there were close to 200. The only arrest in the case was for obstruction of justice. About 60 actually confessed to her murder and for a long time, there were several confessions each year. The son of a major suspect, Steve Hodel, thinks his father. George Odell murdered her. At some point, he learned that his father had sexually assaulted his daughter, Steve's sister. That compelled him to delve into his dad's life. He had been a doctor, did abortions, and was suspected of killing his secretary and of several other murders but none was ever proven. There was a lot of evidence at the DA's including tapes of his confession to the murder of his secretary. He was a respected doctor and he was able to sidestep any inquiries and moved out of the country before he could be arrested. He had 11 children by 5 women. He died in 1999. Letters that arrived at Police headquarters matched George Hodel's handwriting. He was a suspect in at least 4 other murders. And he was said to be a sadist. The case will continue to be a cold case on the books in Los Angeles.

Just seeing the images of the deceased body of Elizabeth Short is one of the most gruesome things I have ever seen.

You'd think with DNA they'd be able to solve more of these old mysteries.

You would. But in this case, the body had gasoline pored on it.
