The Carnivore Diet can lead to kidney stones

That isn't really shocking since is is an insanely unbalanced way of eating. I'm sure it would lead to increased cardiovascular issues and cholesterol issues as well. People who follow it eat just meat, eggs, and minimal amounts of dairy. I have had kidney stones in the past and I must confess they weren't a big deal. The way they were discovered was when I was actually having a gallstone attack but the doctors focused on my kidneys. I passed them and never knew. The gallstones were the major issue that almost killed me. That being said kidney stones are no joke. My second mother has been in the hospital twice in the past 2 months to deal with them. You can avoid having them if you modify your diet. Not really sure why people would eat a diet that would create stones that they have to pee out. Um, maybe just learn how to eat like a normal person?

That kind of extreme diet does seem risky. Especially when it comes to ling term health issues. High protein and low fibre intake can definitely lead to kidney stones, cardio issues and other health issues. It is surprising that some people are willing to take the risks even after being aware of things. They want to follow a trendy eating plan instead of a healthy one. Your experience with kidney stones could uncomfortable but at least they are as serious as the gallstone issue. Gallstones can be painful and fatal. Your second mothers; struggles with kidney stones can be awful. Repeated hospital visits can be painful and exhausting. Balanced eating does seem to be best approach to avoid unnecessary situations. Take care!

I doubt I would last 3 days on that diet, and I wouldn't want to do more than that, due to the possibility of health issues.

@snowy22315 seriously. The cholesterol levels must be off of the chart.

@NJChicaa Not necessarily, maybe if you did it long enough. They say with Atkins and Keto other restrictive diets of its type your cholesterol actually goes down. However, I don't even feel well on those kinds of diets..so I doubt it is doing anything good for me.

I have a neighbor who did that carnivore thing for several years. He did get kidney stones, and his cholesterol was through the roof...he couldn't pass one of the stones, something about it being so large, it was blocking his ureter. He had to have surgery. He doesn't eat that way anymore. His family was upset with him, as they had nagged at him to stop, and he wouldn't . Hey, I love a good steak, etc. once in a while, or some other form of meat. But not all the time. I like variety in my meals. Even if it were good for me and I could do it, I wouldn't. Not after hearing what he went through.

Some people on a diet of only vegetation can also get kidney stones because of the high amounts of oxalates in foods like spinach, broccoli, beets, almonds, beans, sweet potatoes... etc.

@NJChicaa I've never had kidney stones. I didn't realize that was the reason people were asked to capture them...

Yup. That's why they want people with kidney stones to pee into a filter so they can capture the stones and then analyze them to see what they are made of

I can't believe that people go in for these way-out diets. Surely it's very unnatural. Our son has kidney stones a while back and said it was incredibly painful.

That's why I plan on being a complete vegetarian (not vegan) by the time I turn 30

@DaddyEvil I think all of it is destined. If its bound to happen, it will happen.

@Dreamerby I don't think anything is destined to happen. We all have choices we make and things happen because of those choices.

What is a gallstone attack? How do gallstones occur?

gallstones are crystallized bile in your gallbladder. When you eat your GB sends bile into your digestive system. When they are stones they can't go through the bile duct and cause extreme pain. Women who have given birth and who have had a gallstone attack say that the gallstone attack is more painful.

I know my neighbors were on that kind of diet. She lost tons of weight. I'm assuming her husband must've been on that diet too . . . he was normally slim to begin with, but that could possibly explain his kidney stone issue - hmmmm. As much as I love my meats, I don't think I could eat just that.

No it isn't a healthy diet at all.

Sorry you had a gallstone attack, what caused it in your case? My main concern with carnivore is how freaking expensive it has to be, but yeah, it doesn’t seem healthy either no matter what those who support it claim.
