Are all of these airline incidents and crashes concerning you?

They concern me. Right now, I am needed at home, of course, and I'm not planning on flying anywhere. However, several of my children sometimes from work fly for work, and of course friends do as well. I have heard from several friends that are beginning to be concerned about the airline industry in general. Of course, we all have no way of knowing just what the issues really are, we can speculate, but that does nothing but spread false information.
The helicopter/plane crash recently in Washington, D.C. was, of course, fatal to all involved, and a horrible tragedy. From what they have reported so far, it appears to point to pilot error by the helicopter? I know it is still under investigation at this time.
Sunday, an American Airlines flight, from JFK to Dehli, had to land unexpectedly after a bomb threat was made--evidently, from someone actually on the flight. No wreck, and no bomb found, just a lot of delays, and angry passengers. No guilty party found yet either. I hope they do find whoever did this, it certainly isn't acceptable in any way.
'' every passenger was dragged from the plane and detained within the gate before undergoing another security check, according to View from the Wing. While passengers waited in a section that was blocked off, incoming baggage was removed from the aircraft and placed on the tarmac for examination.'' MSN news.
Incidents like this are costly, frightening, and cause much stress and delay. I know every bomb threat has to be taken seriously. And I suppose in our present day world, a bomb is possible. I don't know much about bombs at all except for what I have read, but I do know they can kill efficiently and quickly.
It all seems very concerning to me. So many precautions, scanning's, checkpoints--and still these things happen. In the overall number of flights taking off every day, of course the percentage of accidents and such is low--but still, it's happening.
Back in 1996, one of my aunts booked a long desired trip to France. She was so excited for the trip, which she was taking with her cousin. The day before the trip, she woke up very ill and by that night was in the hospital awaiting surgery. The trip was cancelled for them, of course, and rebooked for another time. That trip they planned for so long was TWA Flight #800, if you were around at that time, I am sure you heard about it. Over 200 people died.
I know accidents happen...but are all these incidents/crashes/mishaps/whatever you want to call them, accidents?

With so many so close together, I don't think so. Many of the planes, themselves, have been around a long time and have made many successful flights. It seems odd to me that so many have ccoured in such a short time span.

@MarieCoyle But, I've decided I don't want to fly because of risk of wheelchair loss or damage.

I have heard of that happening. Evidently they just toss them in the hold and they are broken when removed. Very sad.

It's concerning me. Luckily I did most traveling by plane in the past. Now, I am not traveling as much.

@MarieCoyle I wouldn't mind trying Amtrak the next time I need to travel. Have you ever taken a bus like Greyhound or a train like Amtrak?

When my youngest daughter moved to Florida, she said I could come whenever I wanted to. She always sends the tickets and we colaborate on the times, days, etc. With my son this sick, I am not able to go, and I miss that terriby. I always flew there. Of course, during my life I have flown a lot, but now am down to mostly just flying to her.

It makes me wonder how many were because of a lack of the right employees being available. I do not fly if I can avoid and this isn't changing my stance on flying.

@MarieCoyle ........They need to be maintained every so many flights I would think. With less employees those type of things go by the wayside.

My personal theory, and I have researched it somewhat, is that the maintenance of some of these flights could be what many of the problems stem from. I mean..ok, think about it. Pretty much every business we know of or deal with has a problem with not enough help. It's affected the airline industry as well. I imagine in many cases, the maintenance that maybe two people did on a plane is now done by one person in a big hurry. It's just a guess, but it does seem very possible.

I am wondering if some of it is plain old maintenance for the planes? It seems likely, at least at some of them, but of course speculation isn't good on this subject. Hopefully, this bad stretch is over, but then again, we never know.

My husband and I have talked about flying to Phoenix next Fall to visit with daughter. Hubby heard about the airline disasters and said NO! They made another good excuse for us not to go- I admit that we put in a lot of effort for a 2 day visit. I am not sure how we would manage a big airport and all the walking etc. these days.

I do know that airports will provide you a wheelchair ride from the front of the airport to whereever your loading gate is, and then will put you on the plane, too. No charge, but of course a tip is in order. I did that with my aunt more than once, and a friend does it often that way.
Is there an Amtrak anywhere around that you could take to go see her? I love train rides.

@MarieCoyle We tried getting airline help once and found the employee had as much trouble as we did. Amtrak station is about a mile from my house. I love that. Daughter rode the train from her place to us once. That left her sitting for I think, about two days, each way. Nights, too. I love using the Amtrak to get up and down the Washington coast. My main gripe with the train is that my dogs are not allowed on.

@MarieCoyle I would do exactly what you do to get into Chicago. I will not drive very far north because if I do I run into gigantic Tacoma traffic and even bigger Seattle traffic before I am finally free in the counties that call my name. So.... to go further north I take the train.

Certainly I want someone to get to the bottom of them. Is it a trend out of design or is it just circumstance? We don't know. As for whether it would stop me from doing something? No. Not any more than shootings do, car accidents, or anything else for that matter.
One can't stop living just because something might happen.

@MarieCoyle I think making wise decisions is different than being fearful. I won't drive through a bad area at night either if I can avoid it. But to me that's just common sense based on a reliable source of data that supports that is probably a good decision to make.
When it comes to other things that get a lot of coverage like these plane crashes, or even mass shootings, it's more UNLIKELY you will fall victim to these things than will. So, to me, it's all a matter of checks and balances and mathematical computation combined with rational reasoning.

It's much less likely that a person could die in a plane crash compared to a car accident. It's just so much loss of life all at one time, I think, that shocks us. A person can take reasonable care to be as safe as they can, but they can't stop living and hide, and still have a life.

No, we cannot stop living. But it's amazing how many people basically never leave their home at all, unless they absolutely have to. They are often lonely and sad, but scared. Do I avoid driving in an unsafe city area at night? You bet. Am I more aware than I ever was? Definitely. However, some things must be done, and I don't want to just be stagnant.

We have not flown in a very long time. I think I would love a long train ride, though. Usually we figure that we had just as soon drive as fly by the time we drive to the closest airport, get there early to check in, etc. we could just about be anywhere we want to go driving and at our leisure.

I keep forgetting to ask, did you and your husband ever get to see his sister--I think I remember she lived in New England?

That helicopter hitting the plane baffles the heck out of me. I think about so many scenarios on why she didn’t see or hear the warnings, and I don’t understand.
I’ll be flying in September because of the family cruise. I’ll do what everyone else does, of course, but I wonder how they’ll feel about flying if this continues.

I don’t understand the helicopter/plane collision completely. It’s like someone either didn’t do their job, or the just didn’t care, and weren’t paying attention.
I honestly prefer road trips over flying, just because I enjoy the scenery. But in your case, yes, you would have to fly.
