Mystery Meat Burger

Not much of a mystery if you read the tags.
I know it's illegal in some parts of the world, can you buy this meat where you live?
Anyway, it should taste like beef and I guess it does. I don't eat beef often so I'm not too sure.
It's leaner than the average beef, and higher in iron.
I don't usually buy horse meat, but these burgers were on sale and given my low blood iron levels I decided to give them a try.
While I still prefer soy burgers, this one was good nevertheless.
My family buys raw ground horse meat as well, to make some sort of steak tartare.
Again, it's a delicacy we get sporadically. I've never eaten any other "cuts" of horse meat besides the burger and the tartare.
Have you ever had horse meat?

@somewitch I raised horses for years. Never truly thought about eating them. But I have also raised chickens, cows and goats and will eat all of those. I know some don't eat cows and others don't eat pigs. It all depends on how you are raised. It is illegal here.

@wolfgirl569 Aww!
Fair enough.
I used to ride horses and the ladies that worked at the riding school were disappointed to know I'd eat horse meat. While it's generally illegal to have such meat in the US, the idea of eating it must be even worse for those who raise or keep horses as pets. Is it?

@somewitch That's interesting. USA has a lot of food recalls and is quite strict about food quality in general.

@allknowing I hope this horse I had was raised humanely and had a happy life overall, but that's what I wish for any farm animal.

@allknowing I guess it largely depends on what they got to experience during their lives. There are chicken who never get to see the sun.
If you never get to experience freedom, then I don't know if you're able to wish for it. But it looks like they can experience stress and it must be even worse when they can hear their friends being butchered.

@somewitch I don't have stomach issues. I guess I was saying that eating a horse would remind me of horses that I've been friends with. Same with cows.

@sallypup Yeah, I guess horse would be much worse for your stomach. What condition do you have, if I may ask?

@grenery8 This burger was so good, but it wasn't made of ground meat only so I think that's why. They added a bunch of other stuff, felt like reading the ingredients of a soap, I don't remember any. Hopefully it wasn't poisonous.
I don't think I would have enjoyed a horse steak instead, probably too hard and dry.
Yes, beef is probably second when it comes to iron.

@AmbiePam Oh, I didn't know it was popular in France. I live relatively close to there so it makes sense we eat it... along with frogs and snails.
Personally I find cows to be as adorable as horses, if not more. Actually, donkeys would be the cutest. But I'd eat them all, "cute aggression" maybe.

@JudyEv Oh, I see. That makes sense. Even if I don't see eating as cruelty, killing might be but once that juicy burger is on the plate, different story.

@sathviksouvik I can see how it's possible, I've never seen horses being bred for their meat. But those who don't compete in races might end up there... on my plate.

Why is it illegal in some places? Horse meat that's why?
