What should I have done?

My mom bought stuff from Bloomingdale’s but then returned some of it. The returns didn’t make it into the same monthly billing cycle as the purchases, so the bill that was generated still has all those items. I wasn’t sure if I should pay the statement balance or the current balance. I spoke to someone via chat and they told me I should pay the current balance and not the statement balance, so that’s what I did. I hope they didn’t tell me the wrong information.

I wouldn't know what's right or wrong but I guess you'll find out in time.

I have no idea about this but it is always good to pay something one way or another

It is the only way not to end up with a credit but it's possible you may incur interest charges. However a call should get them removed.

I didn’t want my mom to end up with a credit on her card as it’s a store card and not a general credit card. I hope there won’t be any interest charges.

@lovebuglena Even if you have a credit, you have the option of calling the card issuer and asking for them to cut you a check. It's your money. Not theirs in that scenario.

Nope. That's exactly what I would have done. Just paid the bill in full.

I’m confused. Are you saying I should have paid the full balance on the statement and not the current balance, which was lower because it includes the returns?

@porwest The monthly statement doesn’t include the returned items as they were returned after the statement was generated. When it was time to pay the credit card I didn’t pay the statement balance. Paid current balance on the card instead, which was lower than the statement balance because of the returns. Guy I chatted with on Bloomingdale’s website told me to do that. Now I wonder if he was wrong. Hope they won’t charge interest.

@lovebuglena The current balance. But now you have me confused. How can the current balance be lower than the full balance? I mean, okay, MAYBE if the full balance doesn't account for the credit applied. Of course, you are probably meaning the paper statement, which of course would be different.

I don't use credit cards and have never used them before, so I'm not sure. I hope what you have done is the correct decision.
