From The Heart

As many of you know, my husband retired 2 years ago to provide in-home daycare for our son's twins. There is a severe shortage of daycare spaces in our region, and he and his wife did not want their girls raised in that environment, so they asked dear old Dad if he would retire and look after the girls. He accepted with such great happiness. He missed so many 'firsts' when our son was growing up because he was working to keep a roof over our head, food on our table, and clothes on our back. He is loving all of these little and big milestones that he enjoys with the girls. He takes them to a provincially run Early ON playgroup, which we affectionately refer to it as, 5 mornings a week. They do simple crafts, have open play time, read books, sing songs and share a snack together. He has become good friends with some of the mothers and 1 grandmother. When they found out it was his birthday yesterday, they fussed over him. After playgroup I believe that they went home and cooked some of their delicious cultural dishes and went shopping. He had birthday #2 today as a result. The Philippinos made him their delicious spring rolls and some other dishes which I cannot recall the names of. We have lots of meals to reheat and enjoy. One close friend, also put a 6-pack in with the foods that she made. Another friend bought him a baseball hat and another gave him a box of fancy shortbread cookies. Those gifts, homemade yesterday afternoon, were straight from the heart, and mean more to him than anything wrapped up ever could. He has made some really great friends through the twins by taking them to the playgroup.

That is what his brothers and sisters have been saying for the past couple of years. Last night he told me how blessed he feels, a loving wife, son and daughter-in-law that he is able to see 5 days a week, 2 fun granddaughters and a host of loving friends. I told him that he is blessed indeed.

Yes, and a rich and loving one at that. We will have Phillippino for supper tonight and we are having Chinese tomorrow to celebrate (again) with our son and his family.

He just loves it. Even though he is officially retired, his alarm goes off at 5am 5 days a week and he is up and out the door at 7, that is devotion.

It is alot of work, people comment to him all of the time, you do this with 2 of them, how do you do that. It is actually very calculated because he would time it so that he could start one girl on a feeding (when they were on bottles) and get her started and then after her first burp, he would get the other one going. One of them is much more patient and always has been. As they grew, it became more of a each one in their own time issue, when they took their first steps, when they could put their own shoes on, going to the bathroom, dressing themselves, things like that. He is very patient.

Nothing is nicer than homemade food, and I think that they gave him enough that we can have about 3 meals off of them.

That is so sweet that they celebrated his birthday today with those homemade dishes, etc. It's so extra special that the twins have their grandpa providing their daily care and all the wonderful memories being made.

Isn't that just the most heart-warming story? They wouldn't do this if it wasn't genuine. And what a lovely way to spend (some of) his retirement.

He is so very happy, between being a big part of our son's day and being fully responsible for the girl's care, and the great friends that he has made while caring for them. He will fully 'retire' when they start to junior kindergarten, which will be when I retire. But these years have been a great segway from being an employee to being a hands on Grandpa.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't remember that your husband had "changed careers" like that. So rewarding for him and the babies.
