If you think the 1955 stuff sounds strange, you can comfort yourself that it was 70 years ago. But 1985? You still hear these songs on the oldies channel! “Oldies channel.” Ouch. I lived through that year. And now that was 40 years ago?!?!?!? If you think 1955 is weird, just wait until you see what I’ve picked for 1985! The top ten has three big hits, one medium hit, and a lot of the college rock I was heavily into back then. It was just as diverse as 1955…but in a much better way. And remember, you asked for it! Unlike the 1955 teaser, poor ‘Retha was the last song cut from ‘85. (I’m sure you’ll remind me of that… “You left off that great Aretha Franklin song for this???” ) Here’s the Queen of Soul on the “Freeway of Love.”

Thanks. I don’t think I “know my stuff” as much as I’ve been alive for a long time.” In 1980 Steely Dan had a song referencing someone who didn’t know Aretha Franklin (“Hey 19, that’s ’Retha Franklin, she don’t remember the Queen of Soul”). She’s one of the two acts who just stole the show in The Blues Brothers (the other being Ray Charles).

Bruce Springsteen wrote a song (it was the B-side to “Dancing in the Dark”) called “Pink Cadillac.” Natalie Cole covered it in 1987. I can understand why that would happen.
