Keeping a list of handy numbers

The photo is of an old church that we’ll be passing on our way to on house-sit on Monday. It doesn’t have much to do with the post. Make that, it doesn’t have anything to do with the post. We live in a retirement village. One of the people residing in each house has to be over 55 so there is quite a range of ages with a few people still going out to work each day. We have our own website although not everyone belongs to it. People often ask for recommendations for a tradesman and I now have a file where I keep all the recommended names and phone numbers, if supplied. I have electricians, cabinet makers, plumbers, mechanics, people who fix garage doors, local hairdressers, physiotherapists, dog groomers, podiatrists, etc, etc. Rather than having to trawl back through old FB posts I can go to my file and hopefully find whatever contact it is that we need. I haven’t had to use it yet but no doubt the day will come.

I do have some of the numbers of people who have got our job done well, and recommend them to people who need their help. This saves time and effort of looking up into various sources. Also its kind of helping them get some clients for their work!

If a friend or acquaintance has recommended someone, then with luck they can be relied on to do a good job.

I keep a list of businesses that we have used and liked the person/people who did the various jobs for us. When I'm in a conversation with someone and they mention they need something done, I ask if they've got someone in mind for the job. If they don't, I drag out my phone and give a recommendation.

That would be really helpful and in a way it rewards the tradesmen for doing jobs well.

List of names and numbers is very important. During a recent trip I realised that a paper list is essential even though we are very much dependent on our mobile phones.

@JudyEv Plus sometimes the phone battery gets very low so a manual list is handy.

In our big country, it often happens that we have no reception for our phones so having a paper copy can be vital.

I still maintain such book but that is for worst come worst situations. Normally, Dad has all the numbers that I have so if my cell phone fails, I can get it from Dad.

@JudyEv I would think your husband would have the numbers in his cell of all such tradespersons. That way, there is always a back up.

Is the church still active? We had a church in Hilger Montana that met every other Sunday. The two bars in that town of about 30 were open every day.

I think there is a service held there once a month. That's quite common at these smaller country churches. Some have been decommissioned, sold and converted to private dwellings.

Do you use smartphone Judy? If you do, it is easier to organize in contact list. I mean, you can write plumber Jack, plumber David, and so on. Then hairdresser Jane, hair dresser alice. You don't have to look into files, or fb posts. Everything would be in your contact list.

I like the old church. Good tip, I should do what you've done, already I can see I'll need someone to fix all aspects of this mobile home .... gee, I wish I had the money to simply buy a new one, mobile homes are so much like cars that some times it makes no sense to keep them for as long as I've had this one, it's 21 years old already.

In some of our areas, we'd be battling to get reception so then a 'hard' copy is very handy. I haven't quite worked out how to put the numbers on my phone - 'cause I'm lazy too.

Yes, it is quite handy to jot down your contacts on paper and keep copies of them on your bags or wallet so in case you lose your mobile or in case of emergency you'll still be able to contact your family. I always keep a copy with me all the time as I do tend to forget things.

Now that there are no yellow and white pages phone books, it's handy to have the numbers somewhere. I have a few business cards under magnets on the fridge too.

Sounds like you have set up a really practical system. Having a file with all the recommended tradespeople must save a lot of time when someone needs help. It is a good thing that the retirement village has a mix of ages. This will keep the community active and engaged. Even if not everyone is on the website, it can be built up over a period of time. Searching through old Facebook posts for contact details can be a hassle, so having everything in one place is smart. Perhaps a telegram or WhatsApp group would be better. It might be useful one day. It is nice to be prepared than scrambling at last minute for things. Enjoy the weekend!
