A new recipe

Sometimes I like to try something a little different for dinner. The snag is that Little One is very resistant to trying anything that isn’t purely meat based (she has totally not embraced the ‘plant-based foods’ movement ) We used to eat more vegetarian meals before she came along. Anyway the other day she was out so I decided to try a recipe I had saved up for quite a while. I came across it in a National Trust magazine and it was for pear and Wensleydale quiche. Sounded intriguing so I gave it a try. The result was quite nice and definitely something I would make again if I happened to have a glut of pears to deal with. Sadly this is something that rarely happens as our pear trees struggle to produce anything! Big One wasn’t all that keen either but it made us ‘adults’ dinner for two days along with some potatoes. It was pleasant enough but as a taste sensation the whole was not greater then the sum of the parts – a juicy ripe pear with a slice of Wensleydale cheese was more of a treat! For info: Wensleydale is a white, crumbly, hard cheese made in Wensleydale in Yorkshire. Kind of a bit like a harder version of Feta but made with cow's milk. Famously a favourite of claymation character Wallace, of the Wallace and Gromit films such as 'The Wrong Trousers'! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

At home, I tend to be in the Little One group, but out and about I like to try different foods. Not tried pear and Wensleydatle

It was nice enough, but not a great favourite.

My husband was very resistant to change and never wanted to try anything new; so I totally understand. Have a good day.

Sometimes I feel like we're eating the same old things week after week and I just need a change. Luckily Little One is totally averse to trying new things - as long as they are meaty enough!

That sounds different with the possibility of being delicious. I am glad you described the cheese down below. I was clueless.

It was unusual, and quite tasty although not going into the 'favourites' collection!

Yes that's the real test - would you make it again. I would, but probably only if I had a glut of pears!

My BIL raves about having had Wensleydale cheese with fruit cake in Yorkshire. His daughter lives there now.

I would try a taste but I prefer more meat based meals, too, just like Little One. Once in a while Pretty will make a vegetarian meal and I might eat some of it. Usually I'll eat a bite or two and then make myself something that doesn't taste like cardboard. I like trying new-to-me cheeses and I really like pears but don't usually eat them together.
