Don’t I feel safe.

I just got an apartment wide text from the manager informing residents management has hired a security guard at night to keep the homeless from continually vandalizing the laundry room and vacant apartments. Don’t I feel safe. If only it was a real security guard. This guy is a resident who wants to make some extra money. I guess I should be grateful they are doing something. This would also explain that guy a couple weeks ago standing outside my door saying, “Let me in.” I live in the suburbs, people. Can you imagine if I lived in the city? The residents told me homeless people were living in the woods behind my apartment complex. I guess they were right. I try not to come home after dark. And it ticks me off I’m afraid to be outside my apartment complex at night. I shouldn’t have to be scared. And it’s never the women skulking about, is it.

That sounds disturbing. I'm glad you have any security at all. Please stay safe. Check the doors to make sure they are locked multiple times. You just never know with people.

You know that I love wooded areas. Now its gotten so that could be a dangerous place to wander. I hope you stay safe.

Thanks, Lenore. I do love seeing the foxes and rabbits come out of the woods. It’s really nice to see in person.

That's not a nice situation to be in. I hope something can be done about it to make things better for you and to find those people somewhere to go as well!

They don’t seem to like the places available, but some just aren’t getting the mental help they need. Well, the help is offered, it just isn’t taken. But that seems to be a common problem, taking medication, whether people are homeless or not.

I had a guy stab himself when I first moved here. I found out when I stepped outside my front door, and pools of blood were in front of it. I followed the blood up the stairs where handprints of blood were on the railing. But again, he did that to himself. New Jersey is definitely scarier.

@NJChicaa But you like it? Or do you stay because of family and friends?

Terrific! Couldn't someone in the church let you rent an apartment from them for a small fee? It would be better than that place! Surprised our dad isn't doing more to help you find more suitable digs.

I don’t think anyone in my church has an apartment available. And they’d then have to get approved by Section 8, which probably wouldn’t be hard. Low income housing is just never good. I really shouldn’t complain; it’s just frustrating. My dad tried to get me into a place close to him only to find out the place was public housing. Never in my life have I seen public housing in a good area of town. They were duplexes, and brand new. Such a shame. Well, a shame for me, but at least those people got lucky.

@AmbiePam You and your dad have a big family though and he knows a ton of people. Surely, something could be found that s better than where you are living now.

Please stay safe out there! I remember at our last apartment, they locked up our laundry rooms and tenants could only go in with a code. They said homeless people were hanging out in there at night (the laundry rooms were in the back of the complex near the parking spaces). And supposedly homeless folks were living across the street along the wall where there were tall straggly bushes. Is there good lighting in your apartment complex?

It’s funny you mention that. The text also assured residents they’d keep changing the bulbs going out. For a full year not one porch light had a bulb in it. You need a key to change them, so the residents couldn’t do it. You couldn’t even see to get down the stairs at night.

@AmbiePam Oh gosh, they had better change those bulbs - that's not safe at all. If you couldn't see the stairs, then someone could be lurking/hiding as well .

Wouldn't just be easier to make the homeless people the security guards and pay them that money so they would not be homeless anymore. Then you would not have homeless people anymore and even though, not true security guards, you would actually feel safer because someone gave them a chance. Do not mind me, I have dumb logic. I do hope you safe, though

I think the mental illness is the problem. We’ve got some not taking medication. If they were, things could be a little different. We’ve also got a shelter nearby. Much better than the woods. People leave food out (cans of soup, cereal…) for the homeless, but they end up throwing it at the walls, and making a mess. Thus the need for security.

@AmbiePam I hear you, stay safe and just make sure because not all mentally ill, they just act out because life and maybe themselves let them down. They just need to be reminded there is a better way.

Sadly the homeless are everywhere. I do not feel that they are a threat in our area, as they keep to themselves, and never attempt to bother anyone that I know, but your situation sounds different. Is it time to do a search for another place? Moving is such a scary thought, and of course no guarantee that the same threats do not exist there now or in the future.

I know how you feel about homeless people knocking on your door asking you if they can come inside. There are a few persons in my neighborhood who have knocked on my door to either complain about garbage on the front lawn or a loose dog in the neighborhood.

Even if he is security, he has no reason to demand to be let in. A little security is better than none. I know you are in government supported housing and you live in an area that is near enough to see your dad often, but I sure wish you could get something better.

That's sickening. If you could afford it, a house just went up for sale in my neighborhood. It is a safer area.
