Uh-oh. Quite unintentionally, it’s a two-for-one country music day! At least this guy you’ve heard of. One of the biggest success stories in country music of the last 50 years, and one of only three people to win “entertainer of the year” after being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. One Hall of Famer, singing about another one, as we head back to 1985. Lefty’s Gone - George Strait If you’re wondering, the other two to win “entertainer of the year” as a Hall of Famer were Eddy Arnold and Garth Brooks. Even if you weren’t wondering. Yes, it’s King George, singing about another country music legend, William Orville “Lefty” Frizzell. You’ve probably heard the two songs mentioned in this song, just by someone else: “Always Late,” later done by Dwight Yoakam; and, “If You’ve Got the Money (I’ve Got the Time),” which Willie Nelson covered. This song is sad, pointing out that Frizzell “was sad and lived alone.” Another song about him, Shel Silverstein’s composition “Rough on the Living” (“Nashville is rough on the living, but she really speaks well of the dead”), pointed that out as well. Frizzell was an old man when he died at 48 of a massive stroke. He lived hard. He left a treasure trove of music for generations to love, and for people like fellow legend George Strait to honor in song. Lefty’s Gone Written by Sanger D. Sanger Recorded by George Strait From Something Special, 1985 In every song he sang I played a part:

The whole month is celebrating 1985 and 1955. Then next month we move to 1960 (the year I was born), and in May it’ll be 1975 and 1965. My favorite year from the 80s was probably ‘86. I was talking to Tom Comet, Webb Wilder’s bass player, one night after a show and we were discussing what an incredible year 1986 was for “college rock,” with albums like Webb’s first, the first Steve Earle album, the first BoDeans album, REM closer to breaking out with Life’s Rich Pageant, etc. etc. etc. It reminded me of all those classic albums in the mid-70s, except in the 70s most of the follow-up albums were pretty lame, while that generally didn’t happen in the 80s. I’m sorry, but you got me talking about music.

Some songs on the albums are better than the hits. At least to me.

The big hit from that album was “The Chair” (“excuse me, but I think you’ve got my chair”).

I've listened to a lot of country music and mostly ignored George Strait.

Aw, poor George. He was one of the few country people in the 80s that I paid attention to (along with Randy Travis, Ricky Skaggs, and Dwight Yoakam)

George---probably the best concert I have ever attended. Him, his guitar, his band, standing there singing hit after hit. No pyrotechnics, so swinging around from ropes, no running around. No wonder he is the kind of country music

I saw him before he became a superstar. He posed with people who came up to the stage!

@FourWalls He did that after the concert in Charlotte, after he was a superstar!!! Mike's cousin and aunt came down from WV to go with us to see him because they were huge fans. His cousin went down and got a picture and autograph from him. Super nice. I would have gone but the line was so long and I don't like crowds that close together.

@NJChicaa — BTW, did you know Lefty Frizzell covered “Railroad Lady”? Didn’t think you cared.

What a sad song but it sounds a great tribute to Lefty. Just a young age to die.

Reading about him, I’m surprised he made it to 48.
