The Healthiest Fruit in the World Just Happens to be One I don't Care For

Go figure. I just read that the CDC says that the tomato is the healthiest fruit in the world. (Fruit being anything with seeds.) I don't like catsup and have not cared for tomatoes because most in the stores are not good. I wish I could grow them because they can be very tasty. I enjoy the cherry and pear varieties a lot. I'm going to acquire a taste and try some store bought ones again. To begin with tomatoes are high in lycopene and beta-carotene which are two important antioxidants. Lycopene gives them their rich color and it helps to rid the body of free radicals which can damage DNA. It has also been shown to lower the risk of prostate cancer and the risk of stroke. Beta-carotene is converted in the body to vitamin A which we need for skin and eyes. Tomatoes also have 10 grams of vitamin K, 17 grams of vitamin C, 296 milligrams of potassium, and 19 micrograms of folate. All are good for us. They are also 95% water which makes them great to help us stay hydrated. They are good as a snack(cherry and pear varieties are good choices)and delicious on burgers and sandwiches. That's good. The ones we get in the local store aren't that great. I will see if I can find some decent ones to get their health benefits.

@celticeagle — I have to admit: some types can taste like dirt. But I still love ‘em.

I love tomatoes and used to grow my own in pots on the front porch. I always had cherry tomatoes and the little yellow pear tomatoes. I wouldn't buy fresh tomatoes from a grocery store. They always taste like cardboard because they have to ship them green and put them under lights to get the skin to turn red. Tomatoes need real sunlight to ripen. We buy canned tomatoes to add to different foods I make here at home.

I wish we could grow some vegs and herbs here. It's hard because we have to keep things out of the way of the lawn people.

I am fortunate in that I can get tomatoes which aren't GM and grown here. Also, there's a local company that makes ketchup which tastes really good and I use it to make tomato sauce.

I just bought some that look much like your picture. They are not as small as cherry tomato but not as large as a Roma or salad tomato. The store called them "cocktail tomatoes." In the winter it is hard to find good tomatoes in the store. Can you grow a patio tomato in a pot for you?

Indeed, Tomatoes have a lot of benefits. Yet many of these that we get in shops are not necessarily of a high quality. Having said that, growing Tomatoes at home needs certain skills at maintaining as well as right weather, sunlight and wind conditions. Yet if one can grow at home, there is nothing sweeter than that !

Same here. I don't care for catsup unless it is mixed with mayo to make fry sauce. I'm finicky about what I will eat that has them in. I do like to snack on the cherry and pear varieties though. They usually are good.

If you are buying out of season, the little cherry tomatoes are usually tasty, but big ones are not usually very good. I love tomatoes and I eat them plain, in salads, cook with them…life without tomatoes would be hard!

I love cherry tomatoes and the Roma tomatoes. I have a lot of tomato sauce based dishes regularly. Tomatoes are very good for you as long as you are not allergic.

@celticeagle True. They can either be too sour or too sweet. I'm not too picky as long as they are fresh.
