Our Big Announcement

As a country, our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced earlier this year, that he would step down. He was our fearless leader, loved and respected by many, for 9 years.
Just now, they announced that mark Carney will be the Prime Minister Designate. He will assume the duties within the next few days. He will have to call an election no later than October 20th.
He looks old to me, he is 59 years old. I hope that he has the stamina to keep up with the pace. Leading a country is hard work and very stressful, hence Trudeau's exit himself. I wish him well, heck, I wish us all well.

He's young then. Most of the men who run for president and win are in their 70's and 80's.

Justin is only 53 and he's been in for 9 years, he was young when elected, but he is the son of a Prime Minister, so I feel that he knew more about politics and what it takes to run a country than most do.
The older we get the less tolerant we are to long days and thinking independently yet for the good of the country, and the world in general because all leaders must consider world politics. Too often, as people age, they lose their filter, and come across as less professional because they often speak/act before thinking or gaining consensus from their delegates.

@Juliaacv While there might be some truth to that, you also need experience gained by time. That's why a canidate in the u.S. has to be at least 35 years old before they can run as president.

Hopefully, things will smooth out for both our countries but I'm sure we'll be in a recession until someone leaves office, one way or another...
Good luck to Mark Carney. I hope he's up to the task at hand.

I feel that 2025 has lead us down this path pointing towards a recession.
It has escalated with the tariff threats.
I can see it lasting until at least 2026 as that is when the CUSM treaty is up for renewal, although I think that somebody will just continue the threats until that time. It is too bad, as we here and you there are both going to suffer, and I imagine that those in Mexico will also.
He's an older gentleman, I hope that he has what it takes to keep a country on the right path, they are long and tiring days he is in for.

@Juliaacv I think we were already heading into a recession before the idiot got elected... But he's making things worse in a hurry.

@Juliaacv I am not sure. Is it possible that he had to be retired (quit his job) from the bank so that he could be the candidate to be a Prime Minister? As it seems it is too early to be officially retired at the age of 59. Here men's retirement age is at least after 60 years old.

@wolfgirl569 Yep, you can guess, the other is on our side.
I think that we are all headed for a recession.
The new PM Designate, used to be the head duck for the Band of Canada.
He was good at helping Canadians deal with inflation by lowering the BOC interest rates, which lowered mortgages, loans, lines of credits and so on.

Why is the previous prime minister stepping down though? It's not like he was impeached. Good luck to the new prime minister.

He stepped down because he couldn't professionally continue.
Dealing with Trump is very difficult, and tries his patience and he is a man of integrity. I cannot blame him, he suffered through 1 term having to deal with his nonsense, another one, beginning the way that this one did, with the name calling and whatnot, was just not something that he was up to. I applaud him for knowing when to draw the line, too bad that Trump doesn't have that same realization.

@Juliaacv That's unfortunate. He does seem like a wonderful leader. I wonder what he will be doing now. Will he stay in politics and work in a different position or will he leave politics for good?

@lilacskies He will probably always be interested in politics, but no longer working as a politician.
Right now, he needs to bring the new PM up to speed and then let go and get reunited with his family.

I am old. I remember when he was a baby and his father was Prime Minister. There was a spread in Parade magazine. I wish him and your new Prime Minister well. He will have his work cut out for him with Trump at the helm.

I remember his father as Prime Minister.
I was just a kid though.
I believe that it was Trump that was the final straw that broke Justin's back as far as being PM was concerned. He couldn't deal with him professionally, and was losing ground in popularity in the polls here as a result, stepping down was the right thing to do.

He’s been a good leader for y’all. I hope Mr. Carney continues Trudeau’s strong backbone approach to our enfante terrible.

Although I do not speak French, I can pretty much understand what you are saying.
A little humour does go a long ways, doesn't it?
Justin has been a very devoted politician, and I, personally, will miss that.
He lead us safely through the pandemic and the years that have followed.
I wish him a good rest, both mentally as well as physically, as that job at the top must be awful tiresome.
I think that Mark Carney will follow the groundwork that Justin has laid out.
He will be able to take a fresh approach to the 'enfante terrible' as you refer to, and with integrity and professionalism, tame and hopefully work something out favourable for all of us, on both sides.
We all want, and need harmony, and to be and have a good neighbour.

Justin Trudeau's decision to step down marks the end of an era in Canadian politics. Serving as Prime Minister for almost a decade is no small achievement, and many admired his leadership. There could have been personal and political debacles towards the later half of his journey so far. Mark Carney stepping in as the Prime Minister Designate is a significant development. At 59, he may seem older, but experience often comes with age. Again, there are less people who could step in and help the ruling government. The role is definitely demanding, and needs to be seen how he can be able to turn around the fortunes for the government and ruling collation. With an election looming, he will have little time to settle and make big reforms. Any Leadership transitions always bring uncertainty. Let us watch and see how things turn out.

Justin follows in his father's footsteps who also served 2 terms as our Prime Minister.
We will have an election soon enough, and he has been working with Justin for the past weeks and is familiar with the needs and the projects on the go currently.
