Worst Room

Here is another photo of the West Virginia home. It was undoubtedly the worst room in the house. It was and will be our den. We have started working on it and it is really coming along. I don’t have an updated picture of it yet. We will be doing more work on it in a few weeks when we go to West Virginia. It literally looked like a bomb had gone off in there. Can you believe that someone lived in conditions like this ? It was a sad mess.

You guys should go into the house flipping business! When are you going to install the heating cooling?

Even though it’s not finished that room is looking so much better now. We are trying to figure out the cooling and heating still. Really don’t know what we’ll do. It was built in 1906. It’s never had central air and heat. We have a gas furnace that does a nice job of heating most of the rooms. It needs to be updated to something that heats and cools.

I look forward to seeing the ''after'' pictures, too. Your picture reminds me of a corner of the basement of the house we totally did over, it looked so hopeless. It doesn't appear like that in the picture, but I know it will be when you are done.

We sure hope so. It looks so much brighter now. It has new windows and a new ceiling and it’s clean.

@sallypup Yes, that particular wall was plaster over the cinder block and then old paneling that was falling off.

@Tampa_girl7 Did you have to deal with plaster instead of drywall? We have plaster wall issues here and so far contractors don't want to discuss this with us.

With the window up so high, it looks like it is in the basement, is that right?
With your love and care you will rejuvenate this room to be the cozy and inviting room that you and your family will want to spend time together in. It will take some work, but some projects are just labours of love.

Wow! No, I can't believe someone lived there! I would have taken one look and made a bee-line for the hills!
I'm sure it will be lovely when you and your hubby get done with it, though.

It was structurally sound or we couldn’t have bought it. It is looking so much better.

@Tampa_girl7 I understand... I just wouldn't have known how/been able to deal with it.

@DaddyEvil In the early years after we first bought the house we most of the time had a dozen or so of my family members coming up with us and helping. We were blessed that my daddy, husband, brother and brother in laws were good at plumbing, electricity, masonry, carpentry etc.

Whoa. I was fortunate. We bought our elderly house after it had been renovated. NOT perfect but not like your photo. We still had to put money into the bottom bathroom but somebody had installed a heated floor there. Sooner than later we're sinking money into the roof.

We like it too and originally were going to leave it open. Unfortunately we can’t. I can’t remember what my husband said.

@TheHorse We will leave the bricks on the fireplace exposed. I hope that we can get them a little cleaner.

@porwest The good news is we have paid each project off before we started another and the home is paid for too. We have saved for this coming trip too.

Yes, it truly was unbelievable, but a blessing to us that they had not taken care of it. The condition made it affordable for us to buy.

@Tampa_girl7 The question is, how much do you have to put into it and does the increased future value make a profit?

Wow that really is a mess and can't wait to see a picture of your work in progress or at least when it's finished.
It' really hard to believe that someone lived in conditions like that.

I have so many memories from when my parents owned it in the 70’s. It broke my heart to see it in that condition.

We didn’t live in it until it was fixed up. We still only live there a few weeks at a time as we work on it.
