Finally figuring out what happened in that awful car accident on Friday

At the parade on Saturday I was told that a former student had died in a car crash. I kept reading the news reports and couldn't figure it out because none of it made sense. Even after a pre-work staff meeting and discussion with coworkers I couldn't work it out because what I was told didn't mesh with what was in the news.
By now I know that the white BMW was racing at an insane speed over the bridge, through island towns, and then back over the bridge and through town. The police didn't chase due to worries about public safety. Hmmm I'd think that them doing 118 miles per hour in a 35 MPH zone is a public safety risk. The TR police KNEW that they were headed over the bridge and back there. They didn't barricade it or deploy spike strips.
They just followed the speeding car at a distance and then got to see them crash into a car and kill 2 people and send 2 more to the hospital in critical condition.
I was initially told that a former student was killed in the accident. Nope. He was a back seat passenger in the (his) speeding BMW and he both videoed and posted the footage of them fleeing from police. I saw the FB footage before it was removed. He is still alive. All of them in that freaking car survived. Those in the Camry are either dead or in critical condition.
I am still so upset for the victims. I am angry about those stupid teenagers acting like complete a-holes and not only endangering their lives but that of the public. I am angry that the TR police knew they were approaching and didn't do anything to stop the car. The 17 year old unlicensed driver has been charged with: two counts of aggravated manslaughter; four counts of aggravated assault causing bodily injury while eluding; two counts of death by auto; two counts of causing death while driving unlicensed; two counts of causing injury while driving unlicensed; two counts of aggravated assault manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life; eluding, and four counts of assault by auto. I expect DUI charges to eventually be added as they drew blood from him by warrant.
They won't release the name of the 17 year old because he is a juvenile but I hope he is tried as an adult. The "owner" of the BMW is 18 and will be named eventually. He is a former student of mine.

So your student is still alive? That's a relief at least. I hope he is punished accordingly for his reckless behavior even as a passenger.

@NJChicaa That is so strange. And he has a driver's license? He isn't unlicensed?

@lilacskies The kid who "owned" the car (probably his parents) is 18 and has a license. The kid who was driving it that night didn't have a license and is 17.

So, so many lives affected by these reckless and terrible actions. The 17 and 18 year old will no doubt go to trial as adults (I know they would here) and have ruined their lives as well as the others. All for a joyride. This is horrible.

No, definitely not now. Often I don't think teens think things through. They don't seem to always realize that some of their actions can affect what happens to them, and to others, forever.

So sorry for all involved and being reckless when driving always kills the innocent. I remember ages ago when many towns in Long Island had railroad track on the ground. One two may teenage deaths and injuries later they lifted up the tracks overhead.

I remember a police officer who was employed by the Mississippi State Highway Patrol when I was employed at a pizza parlor who would give stories to us stating that teenagers think that they will live forever since they like to drive like maniacs on the highway,
