Is it true

I saw my doctor yesterday, and she wanted to put me on metaformin, to decrease my cravings for sweets, among other things (polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome). When I mentioned it to a friend who thinks she knows everything, she immediately said, "Don't take it! It'll destroy your memory."
I don't know if that's true. I do know some of you have taken it. How's your memory doing?

I took it for three months and.... what was I talking about?
Metformin started shutting my kidneys down. My doctor at the time couldn't see me when I was supposed to go in for a two week checkup and then I got sick and canceled the appointment at the one and a half month appointment. So the three month appointment was the first time my doctor could check how I was doing on it... Then immediately called and told me to stop taking it because it was shutting my kidneys down... It has been 20 years since I took it and I still only have 90% of my kidney capacity. Doctors say that's all I will ever get back.

@BarBaraPrz Considering I was down to 50% capacity when the doctor told me to stop taking Metformin, I'd say that's pretty good.
But, I still don't recommend it.

My hubby was on Metformin for years. He got so ill and lost so much weight that now he is not diabetic and doesn't take it. He said it really bugged his stomach but otherwise he still liked sweets. Any memory issues is probably age related, not pill related.

Thank you for your experience. Just curious: how long was he on it before he started losing weight?

@BarBaraPrz I don't think the Metformin caused my hubby to lose weight. I think his illness did. He was gravely ill- his bloodsugars went sky high, his esophagus had issues, he had gut issues. He never has gotten back to a true normal for a guy who is just 70- still shuffles and to me, is thin. Doc says he is fine. Hubby is weak and sleeps a lot.

I found out today that my next sister has been on it for years, She also said it wasn't a problem if she took it with food,

Oh, I don't really have any intention of taking more than one pill, so that I can truly say I tried it, before I tell my doctor it didn't agree with me.
I don't like taking pills either, other than vitamins and my stabilizers.

I am on it.
I lot alot of weight shortly after I started on it.
And lost weight where it is really difficult to lose, my thighs and places like that.
It was all over.
It crept back on, and I am still on the metformin.
No issues with it, I follow the directions and take it with food.

Good to know that someone can tolerate it.

I have never taken it so I'm not sure. None of my medication has memory problems as a side effect though. I will have to consult with my doctor just in case.
