Move Over, Sherlock

Sometimes you read about a horrible and tragic event, but what catches your eye more is how they wrote about it. A man was set on fire after a man approached him, threw a liquid substance on him, and lit him on fire, which police say they believe was likely flammable. Wow, that's some amazing detective work, there. You don't say. How much time did it take to come to this conclusion, I wonder? Did they do chemical analysis? Track receipts? Inspect cameras at the local gas stations? Give this guy a raise, and let Sherlock Holmes know he may be out of business soon. There's a new brilliant mind in town.

That's funny. I would have never been able to figure out that the liquid substance was likely flammable.

@porwest it might have been two weeks for me. I’m a little slower figuring these things out.

@moffittjc It makes me wonder, at least two people had to sign off on this. The writer who submitted it and the editor who approved it. Maybe there was simply a minimum word count requirement and the writer was one word short and "likely" made it complete?

I suppose they're trying to be "objective." Or they're engaging in "gallows humor." Just the facts, ma'am.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate a mangled vehicle on the side of the road. "Why, my dear Sherlock, what do you suppose happened here?" He examines the vehicle closely, inching his way around the whole of the exterior, positions his pipe between his lips, and turns to Watson. "It appears it has collided with something."

@porwest At least he wasn't "allegedly" approached by that man.

This was some amazing deduction, wasn't it? Gives new meaning to Sherlock's catch phrase, "Elementary."

Most journalists will make Sherlock Homes go out of business. Very often before the police can investigate into the case the media has already drawn conclusions and given their own story. At the end of the day we don't know what was the truth.

@porwest They just presume things without going into detail about the facts.

The flow of events and substances were quite clear. The man approached, doused the victim in a flammable liquid and lit him on fire. lol

Way to go out on a limb there Sam Spade. I guess the other possibility is the man was passing gas when he was lit. A different type of substance, lol.

I wouldn't have written it quite like that but it's always possible that the liquid wasn't flammable and had ignited something else on the guy. That's just crappy writing.

Considering the man was on fire, I think we can safely assume the liquid was flammable. Had the guy approached with a Bic lighter after dousing the man with water or a glass of orange juice... I am sure there would have been no flames.
