Is making maths optional in senior school syllabus appropriate?

Our government (Kenya) through the Ministry of Education has made mathematics an optional subject for students in senior secondary school... This has resulted in a big rift between parents with some condemning the move and others supporting it. My opinion is that since in junior secondary it is sufficiently studied, then there is no need to force it on those entering senior secondary, especially if their career line does not very much need mathematics. Is mathematics compulsory in the entire secondary school syllabus in your country

I have no idea really but certainly kids in high school can opt out of maths at some point. Not everyone is cut out to be a mathematician.
