What the hell does Trump know about education? He paid someone to take his SATs when he was in high school. He demonstrates how ignorant he is every day by saying things like you need an ID to buy a loaf of bread at the grocery store and that you should use nuclear weapons to stop hurricanes.
The Department of Education provides just 10% of funding for US school districts. Primarily it deals with IDEA (the "Secretary of Education" doesn't even know what that acronym means) which is funding and protections for disabled students, Title 1 (fair and equitable education for all students), and things like administration of federal student loans/grants. It DOES NOT direct curriculum. It DOES NOT decide standarized testing. It DOES NOT fund 90% of school district budgets. It DOES NOT determine requirements to become a certified teacher. All of that is done by individual states.
Wanna know why red states are always in the bottom of US education rankings? Because they can't properly fund the school districts. Because they focus on stupid curriculum like requiring biology teachers to also teach Creationism and Intelligent Design as an alternative to evolution. Because their standardized tests for high schoolers are at like a 4th grade level because their students are so poorly educated. That isn't on the Department of Education. That is on the states.
The Very Stable Genius also just mentioned merit pay for teachers. That has been an idea since G. W. Bush's No Child Left Behind and the push for charter schools. Merit pay for public school teachers is absolute BS. I don't get to select the classes I teach or the students in my classes. They have learning disabilities, emotional issues, no parental responsibility or support, and many cannot speak English or maybe just a tiny bit. No my salary should not be dictated based on test results when I have a random mix of students with many challenges compared to the AP Literature teacher who has senior honors students in her class. We live very different lives despite the fact that we work in the same building.
Trump can't dismantle the DOE. Only Congress can do that. He *can* however make it inoperable. Just look at what Elmo and DOGE are doing to the VA, Social Security, etc. At this point I say go for it. Let the red states become even more stupid and poor. That will clearly make them better. This is what they voted for. Trump said during the campaign that this was one of his priorities. Great. FAFO morons. He is coming for your Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid next.

How can schools etc function if he does this? I would think he would not be allowed to to it,

I thought of you when I read this online earlier today.
Talk about causing stress and unnecessary worry to those working in this field.
Shouldn't he just deal with being president, and never mind all of his attempts to micromanage everything in his country and a couple of others-like ours.
The more he speaks the more he shows his ignorance.
How many more months until your next election?

Thanks for the info. Pretty soon the US Government will be totally inoperable.
