Do you have a theory about why Donald Trump lies even when he does NOT have to lie to look OK?

Why does "president" Donald Trump lie even when he does not have to? He has pretended to be almost a "scratch" golfer, even though he is really a 10 or 15 handicap golfer. Being a 10 handicap golfer is pretty good. Over 18 holes, I would probably be a 100 handicap golfer. I suck at golf. In a recent interview, Trump claimed that the stock market was up 88 per cent during his first term. In actuality, the stock market has done well under most presidents, with the possible exception of the Nixon/Ford/Carter years, and the Bush II years. 88 percent has never been reached, but the market has been up about 70 per cent under Obama (average of his two terms), and over 60 per cent during Trump's first term. I think it was up over 55 per cent under Biden as well. Do you have friends who lie, even when they don't have to? I tend to "understate" my accomplishments. Why would someone lie about something they did not screw up?

A pathological liar lies like most people breathe. He lives in a narcissistic world all his own. Pathetic as it is he is one of the greatest liars I ever have seen in action. Yes, I have had friends who lied. Sometimes I wondered and wasn't sure. Did you see where Trump lied 12 times in his Congressional speech a few weeks ago? I think it is pretty pathetic when a man in his position has to lie when the truth would probably serve him better. The stock exchange is iffy at best anyway. But, I think it has taken a large dive here recently and probably will again. People get scared and it affects it.

I had not seen that. But it does not surprise me. "Did you see where Trump lied 12 times in his Congressional speech a few weeks ago?"

That is a interesting thing. Everyone lies, We have our different reasons. Embarrassed, sad, to protect some one. but why do people lie when they do not have to? Tell the truth, you winning based on lies, oh maybe thats why they lie more.

@TheHorse I agree. People have their reasons, but most do not lie about important things that will ruin others life. This is what strikes me as odd,as half a nation let themselves be lied to and most are going to pay such a price, along with the people who knew.

@crossbones27 It is still strange to me that some people have no morals. But I was "entitled" in that I knew I could get an education if I wanted one.

If you are satisfied with who you are, you don't have to lie about stuff. Except for a noble reason, like to protect someone's feelings.

It's weird. I don't think there are any explanations for why Trump does what he does.

Psychologists seem to understand Trump. But I am still mystified that over 40 per cent of American voters voted for him three times.

It’s wild when people exaggerate things that don’t even need exaggeration. I get why someone might lie to cover a mistake, but boosting something already decent just seems pointless. I’ve known people like that too—it’s almost like they can’t help themselves. Do you think it’s about ego, or is it just a habit?

I really don't know. The compulsive liars I've know suffered from inferiority complexes.

@TheHorse That makes a lot of sense. Sometimes, lying feels like a way for them to compensate or feel more important.

He's a pathological liar. He lies when the truth would work just as well. I hope those who voted for him are proud of their choice..

I wonder how they feel at this point. I have not talked recently to my Montana friend who probably voted for him.

I think his sense of self-worth is dependent on his "alternative reality." But a part of me thinks a part of him HAS to know the truth.

I wonder if he is a cereal liar too. He might claim a hardy bowl of oatmeal each morning when he actually eats a McDonald's Egg McMuffin. Why lie when you don't have to?
