A bit of a surprise

Last weekend we were staying at our cottage in Wales. Little One was in a single bed in the same room as us, and I had draped my dressing gown over the end of her bed when I went to bed.
In the morning I got up first, put my dressing gown on and headed to the bathroom. I was half-way there when I happened to turn my head – and saw a big spider just climbing up my shoulder
I quickly turned around, went outside and shook the spider off. I wouldn’t say I’m an arachnophobe, but nevertheless I’m not keen on having a big spider going down my neck. And this one was quite big as British spiders go – not in the same league as the Australian ones, but a couple of inches across.
I didn’t mention my find to Little One, especially as it must have come from her bed, she would freak out! When she was little she was interested in spiders and in all ‘creepy-crawlies’ but sometime in the intervening years she has developed an aversion to spiders!
I hope it finds a new home somewhere in the woods and doesn't just move back in again!

I read somewhere that there are house spiders and outdoor spiders, and that house spiders couldn't survive outdoors. Whether this is really true or not, I don't know. But if that's the spider in question in your photo, I think he'd be able to defend himself nicely.

That's a nasty one. It looks like a poisonous brown recluse. Was that the actual spider?

Yes that's the one. It's either a house spider (Tegenaria domestica) or a giant house spider (Tegenaria gigantea), I'm not quite sure from the pattern, and I didn't stop to measure it. The picture at the top of this post is a pretty good approximation of its life size though, so maybe it was a giant one.

They don't bother me but I don't want them on me. The snakes are starting to come out here with the warmer weather. They don't bother me either but do like to startle me by suddenly moving

Yikes! That would have definitely startled me too! Good thinking not telling Little One—some mysteries are best left unsolved. Hopefully, your eight-legged guest finds a cozy new home far away from your cottage!
