Here's Something I've Often Wondered About

I've never found a clear answer to this. Maybe someone can give me a clear answer. (Again set to rhyme) The Missing "Grand" Father/, Grandfather/, Great Grandfather/, Great,Great Grandfather/, and so-on down the line.... Mother/, Grandmother/, Great Grandmother/, Great, Great Grandmother/, these all occur in time. But in the case of "Uncles" and "Aunts" the strangest thing occurs... History drops the "Grand" from them And causes quite a blur. 'Cause now your timeline's all messed up and hard to follow through. Since "Grand Aunt and Uncle" don't exist A generation's missing too. Why not "Grand Uncle" and "Grand Aunt"? Don't they deserve a place? In human gen-e-al-o-gy...., I think it's a disgrace! By Carl J. Bridgman Feb. 2, 2025

@singout I agree. In fact, just today I used the term grand nephew to describe my niece's son. I have no idea if that's an accurate description of what he is.

That’s a really good point! It’s weird how the “Grand” gets dropped for aunts and uncles but sticks for parents and grandparents. “Great Aunt” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Feels like they got robbed of a title upgrade!

I am a foster father in a foster care home and. Many children call me uncle. After working in this home for 20 years I am still called uncle, not a grand uncle. No promotion here.
