This rhymed story is the last of my 3 childhood recollections about Pango, our very unusual dog. Surely, there are others out there with fond memories of their pets. If so, share them with us.
"Pango's Halloween"
Halloween was one of Pango's very favorite nights
When "trick'er'treating" children roamed the streets.
He loved to be with children no matter what they did;
He'd follow us and watch us get our treats.
As candy was "off limits" to this crazy dog of ours
So we would bag his favorite chewy snacks.
Then when the door was opened and the neighbors gave us treats
We'd offer Pango treats from his own sack.
One year, as we were walking with Pango by our side,
We wound up on a street we'd never been.
Though Pango was a friendly "pal" to every child he met
The "feline" type would never be a friend.
No one even saw him as he hid within the hedge
A black cat, "cocked and ready" for a fight.
But Pango saw him clearly and then broke into a run
With the cat now loudly wailing in his flight.
Now gone within a second was the cat, now in the lead
With Pango barking fiercely on his rear.
They disappeared quite quickly behind the neighbor's house
Where something changed that caused us all to fear.
'Cause Pango's barks had changed to some painful sounding YELPS
As they both emerged on far-side of the home.
There, Pango had a passenger well- fastened to his rump
As he ran to reach a much more friendly zone.
Now, all the kids were yelling as they reached to help their friend;
That's when the cat decided to let go.
He disappeared so quickly like a "phantom" in the night,
That, where he went, no one will ever know.
Now, through the years I've often thought about that fateful night;
And I suspect that cat had made a plan.
He had to draw our dog away from all his loving friends....
When Pango charged, that's when his plan began.
