I have been doing other things all day and have had no time to come here. I want to watch TV for a while before going to sleep. And I want to look at the book that was written about my father before I put it away at the second floor. Ever since my cousin brought it downstairs, too many people have been interested in my lending it to them. And during my long life I have lost too many books in the hands of friends and family. No real burglar ever takes a book. They are more interested in money and jewels. But if I had all the books I have bought (and the ones that people have given to me) I would need a much bigger house. Sometimes I find my books in the house of friends. I blush when I ask them if they can return it, showing my name and signature written in a page. I don´t know what happens now that many people read books that are at Kindle only. But I prefer the real books with leaves. What do you prefer? Do you like to read? Do you read again someof your books?

I completely understand! There's something about a real book—the feel of the pages, the smell, the weight—that just can't be replaced by digital versions. I do love to read, and I often revisit my favorite books. Some stories just stay with you, and reading them again feels like catching up with an old friend.

I have some books that I now keep inside a plastic bag. I have read them so many times that the pages are yellow and they are coming apart. I don´t want to buy a new version. Even the way they have grown old is part of what I love.

@marguicha True. Those books hold more than just stories—they hold memories too!

Our house is too small to keep real books in bookcases. We put them all in plastic totes and stored them in the garage. So I read ebooks on Kindle now. It's not the same as having a paper and ink book in my hands and smelling them but I still get to read. And friends can't borrow ebooks so they don't disappear or get damaged/ruined because someone else is careless with MY books. When we were moving my paper and ink books to the garage, I downloaded many of them into Kindle and have read them again...

I´m thinking about buying some books to have in Kindle. I would not dream of buying again the mistery books I once read (I already know who did it) but I´d like to reread parts of them. And digital books are a lot cheaper.

@marguicha If the books are old enough, sometimes you can get ebooks for free. There are several sites that offer them legally.

sounds like that book about your father is very special to you, and I don’t blame you for wanting to keep it safe

My father was a pioneer of science in my country. A lot of very important people wrote about him and put together that book. I have a shelf with books either written my father and uncle or about them.

I much prefer real books and, like you, I don't lend them out any more. They hardly ever come back to me.

Even Dixie has taken books from my shelves and doesn´t return them. It seems that there is a karma about books and friends.

I am a very avid reader and I am the same way. I stopped lending out my books because I wouldn't get them back or they would be damaged. It may sound rude but only certain people can even touch my books. My own husband of 16 years does not touch my book unless I ask him to get me one and I have to be very specific lol. I do have a kindle because sometimes I have a problem with my hands and I can't hold the book. That and if I have nights I can't sleep I can use my kindle.
