We're house-sitting insect houses at our house-sit

Well, we don't really have to do anything to them but it's interesting to see them. At several places on the verandah at this house-sit, the lady of the house has set up these little houses for insects. These are designed to provide accommodation for the discerning insect (that’s meant to be funny). A lot of the holes have been gummed up and one day soon the pupae inside will chew their way out to begin a new life. Some apparently are home to native bees which are solitary. There are approximately 800 species of Western Australian native bees. Most don’t make hives.

Insect houses can be a great way to support biodiversity, especially for solitary native bees.

They seem to be quite popular here. I've seen quite a few in different gardens.

They seem to be the latest fad, making little homes available for insects. Once it was bird boxes and bird baths.

There is a bee-hive behind one shed but I don't have to do anything to it, thank goodness.

Did you go inside the insect houses and look around? They might have some unique furniture and paintings that we'd be interested in looking at... They also might have children and pets that we'd enjoy seeing. I can see you're enjoying this house-sit.

@JudyEv I'm not sure we'd recognize insect "antiques" even if we saw some.

That is so kind of you. We have many bees in our gardens at the village. But I always try to use smoke to chase the bees away. They are very dangerous especially if you have domestic animals around.

There is a bee-hive here but it's down behind the shed and we don't have to do anything with it.

A very interesting concept! I don't think one would be able to see such concepts in many countries! 800 number sounds quite big !

@JudyEv This is the problem across countries and continents. Here we even have the population of Common House Sparrows dwindling. The increasing temperatures and sharp variations in rainfall are due to massive habitat destruction.

Bees all look alike to me! lol A lot of natural habitat is being destroyed here as more and more land is cleared.

A lot of natural habitat is being destroyed so someone came up with the idea of supplying this type of artificial habitat.

That’s really neat! (Hope they get five stars on Bee Advisor. ) Wow, most of the bees don’t make hives? They just roam around from place to place? Where do they store their honey?

I don't know much about native bees. Apparently the honey is stored in little sacs that look like a bunch of grapes.

@FourWalls We have a very active bee industry with 'ordinary' bees and regular beehives. lol There is a beehive behind the shed here.

Great! But I don't think I would want that near my house. Bees built a hive in the tree outside my window, and I couldn't open it after midday because they'd fly inside.

You wonder if it's needed but the insects do use them so perhaps it's serving a good purpose.

The 'proper', regular bees have their own beehive behind a shed. It's mosstly other insects in these houses. Glad you liked the comment.
