It’s the people that make all the difference

As I’ve mentioned before I sometimes do events work, generally as waiting staff or stewarding. Some of the events are fun or interesting, and some are more mundane, but I still enjoy going as I only do one or two shifts a week and it gives me an excuse to get out on my bike and also to see people, instead of working alone at home all the time. But what really makes the difference is the people. Everyone who works for this agency is lovely. I don’t know how they choose their staff, whether they accept anyone who comes along (they accepted me after all!) or if they are more choosy. Perhaps they have specific ‘loveliness’ criteria! Whatever, the outcome is that it’s always a joy to work with them, they are so pleasant, friendly, and fun, and everyone gets along so well together even though we have a diverse range of backgrounds and the age range stretches from students to retirees. Today I was at a fairly mundane event, serving a cafeteria-style lunch. But as soon as I walked in cheery voices called out ‘Hi Fleur! How are you? Good to see you!’ One person I worked with last week, one sometime last autumn, and one sometime in the past, but they all remembered me and were so friendly and chatty as we completed all our work together. At the end of the shift we parted with friendly waves and even a hug! That’s what makes the work special. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

A new chemist opened near our village and the staff there are all lovely. The chemist owner told us he took a long time to choose his staff and only employed those he thought would be very friendly and welcoming to customers.

It's great that he put so much thought into that. For a chemist its especially important I think. We are often told that for minor ailments we should talk to our local chemist/ pharmacist for advice, yet often when we do the response is less than the best.

@Fleura The people in the village all seem very happy with the service they get from the chemist and the girls. They are good at remembering names too which always goes down well.
