Does your pet understand you?

I saw a funny entry on Facebook which I thought might make you laugh. It also gives me a reason to put up this photo of my friend’s two rescue Labradors. They were very happy to greet us at the gate and keen to help us unload the wood we gathered for our friend. However, we didn’t need to go into their yard and eventually they lost interest. The quote was ‘I saw a person talking to a cat and she obviously thought the cat understood. I went home and told my dog and we both had a good laugh.’ Are you a cat person or a dog person?

I like dogs more. I don't have pets after Charlie. I think they do understand us.

Dogs are certainly very intelligent and seem to understand much of what we say.

I always preferred cats but can't have any furbabies now. I'm allergic to them. And no, my fishies don't seem to understand me or care to try.

@JudyEv The guppies will swim between my fingers, "petting" me if I put my open hand and spread fingers in their tank. I think they're just scratching themselves but am not sure.

@DaddyEvil I would take it that they are petting you.

My Mum had a friend and her goldfish would swim around her hand in a deliberate sort of way.

Cat, they understand voice inflection more than anything else

I'm sure Herc knew a few things by voice inflection. He certainly knew 'Time to go home, Herc'.

If you spend a lot of time with a pet, you do develop an understanding.

I love it. But in their defense, they understand a lot even though cats tend to ignore us more than our dogs do.

So very true. Tuffy has tried really hard to make me do as he wishes but I've always treated my cats the same as I do my dogs and since he was raised by me and Roscoe he kinda conforms to what I want, mostly anyway.

Dogs have masters; cats have servants. That's another saying that's pretty true.

I don't have a pet yet but I noticed my neighbor's pet understands her when she said something to her pet.

I think many pets are more intelligent than we give them credit for.

100% cat person. Cats take care of themselves. You do not have to take them for a walk.

I am surely a cat person. Yes the cat of my neighbors understood me. He knew something "bad" was going to happen when I was packing my things.

Neither as I felt I will get too attached to them. I always wondered what the animals thought of us. Maybe as a necessary evil!

Certainly we do get attached to our pets. However, they are great companions if a person is on their own.

How cute is she! We don't have hamsters in Australia. Just about any pet will have an understanding of some of what is said, either by tone of voice or context or whatever.
