A Scare

I was supposed to go to Tulsa this morning (my dad was going to drive…it’s 2 1/2 hours away), but got a call from my stepmom saying she was taking my dad to the hospital because he was throwing up and thought he had pancreatitis again (he was hospitalized years ago for that). Two hours and a CT scan later she lets me know he has a kidney stone and they gave him pain meds and sent him home to pass it. We were worried because unlike his late first wife (my mother) and me, my dad just doesn’t get sick (like the flu, a cold, and the like). He’s thrown up three times in his almost 70 years on earth. His side of the family is just country strong, and that’s no exaggeration. I heard one woman say passing a kidney stone was as bad as giving birth. All you who have had them, how bad are they? I heard they were agonizing.

I've never had one and hope I never get one. I've heard a lot of horror stories about them. I hope your dad passes his quickly and he feels better soon.

So have I. I thought nothing could rival a really bad migraine, but it sounds like a kidney stone could. Thanks for the well wishes!

@AmbiePam I agree, I've had some nasty migraines but kidney stones do sound worse in some ways. You're very welcome.

I haven't heard much about it but my dad had one minor kidney stone because it went away with the medicines.

I am sorry that he has a kidney stone. My hubby's oldest sister, Linda, headed up several departments at the hospital during her working career (she is retired now) and she had a kidney stone. She said that she was very thankful for the pain meds because it was worse than having her 5 kids was. I hope that he has an easy time of it.

I am glad it was not pancreatitis and I pray that the stone passes quickly. My sister had the ultra sound treatment that dissolved them.

I wish they could or would do that with him. Tonight, talking to him, he still says it actually feels still like when he had pancreatitis, and he wonders if he could have both. Because he realizes a kidney stone is being passed, it must just feel similar to the time he was hospitalized for the other.

@AmbiePam A good friend had a kidney stone, she was thrilled they used the ultrasound thing and it's gone. I hope if it doesn't pass he has that option, I'm sure he is more than miserable from it all.

I think he actually fears pancreatitis more than he hates this kidney stone. I think because with the pancreatitis they pumped his stomach. I talked to him tonight and he’s afraid to eat because he still feels like it’s pancreatitis, even though in his head he realizes it truly is a kidney stone. They must feel the same.

He was feeling a lot better from the morphine, but every time he drinks something he starts to feel sick again, and he’s scared to drink anymore more even though they told him too.

@AmbiePam That's tough. I know it's horrible to be so nauseous, but the water can help flush out the stone. But then you can get dehydrated if you're vomiting too much. Praying for sure.

Our son passed one and yes, the pain was really bad. He has changed a few things about his lifestyle to try to avoid ever having another.

I've heard they are really painful. My friend had one. It really depends on the size of the stones that must pass. Hopefully he will have no be in too much pain.

I hope the prescription they gave him is strong enough to keep the pain away. He said it took four hours at the hospital for them to finally reach the amount of morphine to take the pain away then. And we know they aren’t righting him a prescription for that.

My dad had it once and his pain was visible. There is a tea he took at that time to broke the stone and it worked for him.

I was lucky. Mine wasn't too bad. I did go to the ER though because I didn't know what was going on. I hope your dad is OK.
