No foolin’, it’s April! That means it’s time to look back 65 years to the year I was born. That wasn’t that big of a deal (except to my mother
), but the music was spectacular! Let’s get the alphabetical ball rolling!
Ain’t That a Kick in the Head - Dean Martin
And you’re thinking, “Hey, didn’t you just use him in the 1955 countdown?” Why, yes! Thanks for noticing!
This song combined Dean Martin’s two major talents — acting and singing — in one place. This song was used in the film Ocean’s 11. (The original, not George Clooney’s version.
) I’ve never seen the remake, and it’s been so long since I saw the original, I can’t remember where it was used (Martin’s character was an entertainer in one of the casinos, so probably in one of those scenes).
The fun of this song, with its slightly-for-the-time naughtiness (“she’s telling me we’ll be wed, she’s picked out a king-sized bed”), is timeless.
Ain’t That a Kick in the Head
Written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen
Recorded by Dean Martin
Released as a single, 1960

Dean was a TV star (with The Dean Martin Show) by the time I was paying attention, but we did have albums by him.

Hey, come back to this one. I didn’t plan it, but both songs today are country. Sorry.

The 60s were a great era for music. Of course, we had the Beatles, but so many other things too!

I know, he was so incredibly special. (And it must be the age…of the songs, not of us.
