Useless – but entertaining

Some years ago we visited Longleat safari park. Little One was really little then. When we entered the park they gave us a CD to listen to as we drove around. This provided a commentary on the animals we would see, so for example it would tell us a bit about the lions when we were in the appropriate area, then it would tell us to pause it until we reached the next area when it would give us more information about the elephants or whatever. As we left the park we had the option of returning the CD or keeping it. Of course the sensible thing to do would be to return it so that they could then use it again, but Little One wanted to keep it. And for a long time afterwards she would ask to listen to it on car journeys. So as we drove up the motorway we would be being told to watch out for wolves among the trees, or on some urban ring road we would be listening to anecdotes about giraffes as we navigated some depressing industrial estate. It was actually rather amusing and we all laughed about it. I had just about forgotten about this until I rediscovered the CD a few days ago. Maybe we should get it out again! That would be entertaining as you drive in depressing, overbuilt up areas... I'm sure it's funny if you're playing it when you have an unsuspecting family member or friend riding with you. We have those types of parks here but I never took Pretty to one of them. I was always worried the animals would damage my car as we drove through one of those parks. (We see videos on YouTube about monkeys climbing on the car and ripping the windshield wipers off or lions that have learned how to open car doors if they aren't kept locked. No thank you!)

Yes they did have a monkey area, but you could choose whether you wanted to go through there or not. We saw several cars coming out with their wipers dangling off and that sort of thing, and opted to avoid it.

@Fleura Yikes! That would definitely ruin my day out if an animal damaged my car! I don't know if you can avoid driving through those areas in the safari parks here.

@DaddyEvil Sure would, it's expensive enough to visit these places without that!

Btw didn't they ask the CD back on your way to the exit?

That was optional, you could drop it off if you wanted.

No we haven't. And I don't know if they would want the CD back, they may have changed the layout - or maybe they don't even use them any more, modern cars don't even have CD players!

We visited this park years ago. I don't remember being given a CD. I don't think we were as I would have kept it too.

It was a new thing for us since the last time we went to any safari park. I suspect it will have gone out of fashion again by now as new cars don't even have CD players!

@JudyEv I know, but you have to save the music ahead of time and then fiddle about to get what you want. Maybe I'm just not skilled enough in using my phone. I just use it to listen to the radio if there's no alternative.

@Fleura So true. Our last one didn't. It was a Kia Cerato but when it was three years old we swapped it for 10-year-old Jaguar. The Cerato didn't have a radio. The sales pitch was that everyone uses their phones for their music, etc.

What a great idea. I love the drive-through safaris. We went a couple of years ago and got to hand-feed some giraffes. It was the highlight of the trip.

Who knew something so mundane would become a wonderful memory. Good thing your little one helped make the decision to keep it.

No, the CDs were included in the entry price. But most people gave them back because what else would they do with them?
