From the silliness of yesterday’s tune we turn to some seriously great soul music for today’s look at the songs from 1965. These are the things we had 60 years ago. Kids, if you wonder why “old people” hate your music, just look at the songs on this list over the first eight days. What a cornucopia of styles we had! Now get off my lawn while you dance to this one. In the Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett Spotlight on Wilson Pickett (“Sweet Soul Music” by Arthur Conley) Here’s a mystery for you. Wilson Pickett was born in Detroit. He died in Virginia. He’s buried here in Louisville. What, the halfway point? Seriously, he spent a number of years living here. (His crypt is in the chapel where my aunt’s service was held, that’s how I discovered he was buried here.) And oh, did he deliver some major good soul music. His biggest hits include “Mustang Sally,” “634-5789,” and “Land of 1,000 Dances.” This was also a good-sized hit for “Wicked Wilson.” Dancing is mandatory. Ooh, sorry. There’s another dancer for the 1960 song. You’re gonna be worn out after today.

And then there's the music and young people listen to today. They don't know what they're missing.

@LindaOHio — not me…them. That’s who it’s made for. It’s not made for us. We have 100 years of great music to listen to.

Love the bluesy cover of Midnight Hour by The Young Rascals. A great job on a really cool song. They did such a great job on that one they decided to do another cover song popularized by Pickett, "Mustang Sally." Although achieving only modest success on the Hot 100 with Midnight Hour compared to the Rascals, Pickett hit the #1 spot on the R&B charts.

We remember Wilson’s version, so the charts were only the snapshot of that time. But the Young Rascals were great nonetheless. (And are now all OLD rascals. Like the rest of us. )
