I find nature fascinating. My neighbor sprays Round Up and has a park like pristine yard. I'm the person with a zillion dandelions.
AND bumblebees. I have bumblebees. I have seen two bumblebees so far this year. Why am I excited about bumblebees? They're on the edge of extinction. Their habitat needs are being wiped out. We need these rather large and lovely creatures to keep our world blooming.
I watched a bumblebee gyrating around then into a patch of tall, weedy grass in my side yard yesterday. I saw the bumblebee going straight in toward the ground. I looked up how they nest and where they nest and what they need in order to thrive. Yes. Bumblebees make nests in tall, weedy grass. Interesting.
I do plan to get the grass more Marine hair cut lower soon as the rain quits making the world wet. I don't plan to have my property perfect and I don't ever plan to spray Round Up or any other cancer causing stuff on this land. I will continue to look out for bumblebees and other life around here and that includes the loud mouth jays.

Round up is dangerous to everything. We don't spray at all. But one neighbor wants that perfect yard. Mine drives her nuts. Thankfully they are up the road a little bit when she does spray crap.

My yard is an eyesore as well for those who love perfection. Personally, I love my henbit that is blooming right now.

Yes, keep that round up away from all pets and bumblebees. Good for you for being conscious of and protecting bumblebees.

Nature is interesting to be sure. We have patches of weeds and wildflowers in our yard, because George hasnn't been able to mow. We've had neighbors help every once in a while, but not often.

@kaylachan You're in a tropical place compared to me. Colors of those wildflowers?

@kaylachan Okay. Sorry if I am bugging you. Years ago my husband told a friend that there were red winged blackbirds nearby. His friend asked how in the world did he know that?? He said cause of their loud distinctive song.

Yay for bumblebees. I caught one once and kept him/her in a jar, maybe for a day. Mom and dad would not allow me to make wild critters captives for life. I named him/her William. I was about seven years old. This was also the era when I was convinced that the little black ants in our yard at that house had followed me from our previous house and were my friends. I also loved roly polys aka pill bugs. Does anyone have that kind of childhood anymore?

I went out picking up trash out of our front yard this morning and finally saw a robin hopping around and catching some type of bugs to eat.
We have dandelions in our yard but I haven't seen any bees of any type playing among them.

@sallypup At our last house, we saw all kinds of birds in our yard all the time. In this house, I've only seen sparrows and crows before this.

@DaddyEvil Strange that you saw no bees in the dandelions. When my Mom lived in Missouri she had a bird feeder and filled it every day. She had gorgeous bluebirds and cardinals visiting all the time. First time for me to see a bluebird.

I asked the guy who cuts our grass to find a more animal and people safe weed spray. We have a chipmunk who lives in our flower bed; and I don't want him harmed, along with other animals and insects.

@LindaOHio That's wonderful about the duck. That is super cute. You should have given him a treat.

@sallypup He's a cute little guy. A couple of years ago we had a mallard duck knock on the door. He was probably looking for bugs.
