I've been watching some TV series lately focused on the most heinous serial killers throughout history. There is quite a list of these despicable human beings, and I was curious as to which ones you would rate as the worst of the worst. There are so many to choose from, but most would immediately remember London, England's "Jack the Ripper." Even his name was infamous, and the fact he got away with it and was never captured added to his mystery. However, I'm going to choose someone not as well-known for my pick as the most vicious and evil serial killer. My choice is H.H. Holmes known as the "Beast of Chicago." He was responsible from anywhere from 20 to 200 deaths from 1891-1894. Holmes only admitted to 27 in custody. He was a pharmacist by trade and a con-man who turned his 3-story home into a torture castle. Holmes constructed this home with secret passages, trap doors, soundproof rooms, gas jets, and a kiln. He used gas to knock out his victims mutilating and eventually killing them on his surgical table. Holmes would then burn the victims in his kiln and sell many of the skeletons to local medical schools. Holmes also ran a life insurance scam designed to collect insurance payouts upon the deaths of the multiple women he seduced and married. He would take out a policy by conning these women, then he would murder them and receive the life insurance. He was finally apprehended for murdering his partner, Ben Pitezel, his accomplice in many of his fraud schemes to collect on a life insurance policy they took out in his name. His partner's widow knew of and exposed the fraud to the authorities resulting in Holmes capture in 1894. Holmes was also accused of killing Mrs. Pitezel's three children to keep them quiet because they knew about the fraud. He was sentenced to death for Pitezel's murder and was hanged in 1896. He was considered America's first serial killer. So, who is your pick(s)? Some Source Info: Wikipedia Photo- Amazon

The person who kills one is as heinous as the one who kills a hundred. Worst mass murderer, without question, is Adolf Hitler.

Great minds think alike. I was going to go with Adolph Hitler as well.

There is no doubt Hitler is the personification of evil and heinous, right up there with Stalin and Mao for the tremendous numbers of people he had others kill for him in the name of his Third Reich. But I would not classify him a serial killer, someone who does his own murdering. I would agree Hitler does share some similar traits associated with a serial killer such as lack of empathy or remorse. And his need for control. But as a mass murderer he is at the very top of the list of them.

They are all heinous...and fascinating. Dahmer, Berkowitz, Bundy, Gacy, Gein and, as others have mentioned...Hitler. There are so many. Remember Aileen Wuornos?

Wow! You named a who's who of the worst ones there. Yes, Wuornos was a vicious killer, filled with hatred of men, who showed no remorse for her actions. Other Scariest Serial Killers: John Wayne Gacy- the "clown killer" (he dressed up as one to entertain at birthday parties) He preyed on young boys (teens) who he would hire to help him with his construction business. Eventually 30 bodies were discovered by police under his home leading to his arrest. He was convicted of murder, plus additional counts of rape and torture and was executed by lethal injection. Gary Ridgway- known as the "Green River Killer," murdered at least 49 women and is suspected of killing more than 90 in Washington State. "I killed so many women, I have a hard time keeping them straight," Ridgway admitted.

I think they have a good case, those who mentioned Hitler. But my answer in the “spirit of your question” is Jeffrey Dahmer. There has to be an extra pain knowing your loved one was not only killed, but also consumed. Have you ever seen the TV show, Timeless? It used to air on NBC or ABC, but it was canceled and now the 2 or 3 seasons air on streaming. They did an episode that included H.H. Holmes. It was fascinating. It made me look up some books about him. By the way, if you ever get a chance to catch Timeless (technically sci-fi, but I don’t like sci-fi, and I loved this) give it a go. I think it was too high concept for the masses, but it is worth watching. There was such an uproar over it being canceled that they did a movie to let the writers have a chance to give it a fitting ending.

@AmbiePam Yes, it is. You wonder what makes these people the kind of people they become.

H.H. Holmes followed by The Boston Strangles and then Ted Bundy. I am of Latvian heritage did you know that one of the first victims of the Boston Strangles was a Latvian woman?

That sound like a good one! I had not heard about him. I'd go with Hannibal Lechter, even if he is a fictional character.
