Sorry, Linda, but it’s country music time. The top ten list of songs from 1965 starts off with what I was listening to in 1965: country music. I discovered all of these rock and soul gems later. So let’s get started with today’s 60-year-old song. #10: Girl on the Billboard - Del Reeves Truck driving songs weren’t new to country music in the 60s, but they hit their apex during that time. You had Red Sovine doing “Giddyup Go” and “Phantom 309” (both recitations), Dave Dudley’s classic “Six Days on the Road,” and so many others. This was another one of those trucker tunes, but with a twist. If ever a song perfectly described the male libido, it’s this one. We have guys so enthralled with a billboard that they’re wrecking their cars and trucks. Worse, the narrator here wants to know who she is, so “I woke up the artist that painted the display.” Oh, it’s fun, and funny, but — much like the guy who actually believes “for a good time call Jenny” written on a bathroom wall in that Tommy Tutone song — it doesn’t say much about guys.
