Jewish Hollywood Icons

I have always found the Jewish faith both interesting and thought-provoking. The Jewish people have such a good work ethic, and many are very smart business people. They have gone through so much over the years, and the persecution they have known is horrible. Yet they stayed strong both in their faith and their traditions. I ran across a documentary last night about the Hollywood Golden Age from about 1930 to 1960. (I love the old vintage movies, and the actors were some of the greatest.) The Jewish actors and how some were black listed and treated badly back then. Yet the actors stayed strong and were proud of their heritage and never hid it. Here is a list of some of the actors you may not know, and others who were famous that were Jewish, and the name they used in the cinema and the one they were born with: * Hedy Lamarr ( Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) * Lauren Bacall ( Betty Joan Perske) * Edward G. Robinson ( Emanuel Goldenberg) * Kirk Douglas ( Issur Danielovitch) * Sylvia Sidney (Sophia Kosow) * Jerry Lewis ( Jerome Levitch) * Paul Newman ( Paul Leonard Newman) * Paul Muni (Frederick Meier Weisenfreund) * John Garfield ( Jacob Julius Garfinkle) * Peter Lore ( Laszlo Lowenstein) Thank you to each and every one of them for what they gave to the cinema. I've heard of a few of those names but the only one I remember watching was Jerry Lewis. Dad loved his shows.

@celticeagle He was never my favorite, either, but dad controlled the television so we watched what he wanted to watch. (Most of the time, mom and I read and listened to the television. *shrug*)

So many of the Jewish actors changed their names to prevent the discrimination. And there was Tony Curtis (Bernard Schwartz) and Mel Brooks (Melvin Kaminsky), among sooooo many others!

Yes, indeed. The ones I mentioned were ones mentioned in the documentary.

I found it interesting how they never hid the fact or tried to be anything other than who they were.

I am in agreement with you that the movies that came out before I was born were so good that a lot of them had happy endings.
