A kite flying festival on Easter Weekend

Kites at the beach

Every Easter weekend, there's a kite flying festival at a beach half an hour away. It was very windy and the first day got rained out. There were lots of kites when we went and a few of them were elaborate. The entire beach was bustling, but noone was in the water as it was quite chopy and chilly. It's been a while since I flew a kite - have you ever flown a kite?

I haven't messed with a kite since my daughter was around 12 years old. I flew kites a lot when I was growing up but I lived on a farm with plenty of room... We've never had a house with enough room for kite flying until now and there are too many trees on our property to make it feasible now. We could go to a city park but she's 37 now and doesn't like doing stuff outside. She prefers spending her time online playing video games. I hope you had fun, at least.

@pitstop Kids make all kinds of activities more lively. My daughter's favorite activity when she was younger was going driving... I'd let her pick a direction out of our city and, once we were on our way, she'd ask me to take the next turn to the right and we'd see where we ended up. Sometimes she'd tell me to keep driving one direction or another and take random turns. We did that a lot back when gas was less than $1 for a gallon... She liked seeing if she could get me lost in the back-country roads. (I start getting nervous after a while if I don't recognize the roads she'd have me drive down... When I couldn't stand being lost anymore, I'd have to stop and ask for directions to the nearest highway and our fun would be over for the day.) Sometimes we'd stop and pick wild flowers along the roadside and take them home to put in vases around the house.

I used to build and fly kites every year with my kids. We had a good time.

Same here Judy. I made a box kite once but it smashed onto pieces when it hit the ground when my son was flying it. He was devastated

I did fly a kite when I was a child living in Panama many years ago.

When we were young kids, we got kites as gifts from relatives quite often. Usually homemade. We used to go to the beach to fly them in the summer. It was great fun seeing who could get the kite highest in the sky. My kids loved flying kites as well and I loved doing it with them. I hope that they fly kites with their kids. One kid got killed though. He flew a kite where he shouldn't have and he got electrocuted.

That's a sad story about the kid being electrocuted. .

@pitstop It was really.sad. Soon after that the power company put up warnings about flying kites and the risk of electrocution Then the height kites were allowed to be flown to were restricted as well. I think the ceiling was 300 feet
