I truly am grateful

When I was in the middle of my life I helped pay the family's bills by caring for home bound folks- often elderly but once in a while, a younger person. I also have cared for fur kids when the kids were in hospital or clinic. Anyway, I guess that caregiving gene never totally goes away. Eons ago hubby and I met at university, talked through many nights, laughed, talked, fell in love. One of the attractions he had for me was that his being blind never came up. He was just an intelligent engineering student who also minored in journalism. He had a very active, very engaging mind. Blindness never had had much to do with us as an US. Here we are at the start of old age. He got very ill a couple of years ago and never totally climbed from the pit. I miss his daring do. His ability to go pound a fence post if the need is there. Today we had a mess to try to clear out from behind a shed. Hubby isn't going outside much these days. I set up the work station for him- in the old days I would not have done that. I brought over our plastic stool for him to sit on as he grabbed stuff and shoved them into a plastic bag so that I could take the bag to the garbage toter. He also sat on the outside swing for a while, under our blooming apple trees. I am just grateful that he had the oomph to get outside and enjoy the summer like afternoon. I am grateful that he ate some food today and had the energy to cuss out some of the political drama that is not going away.

It's really difficult not to cuss at some of the political dramas these days. I hope that your husband enjoys many more days outside in the fresh air - my wife has really severe COPD and I wish the same for her. She seems to have regained the oomph of old. It's great to see her enjoying simple things like fresh air and sunshine

@Ineeddentures COPD is not at all fun. My Dad had that for years. Thanks for your well wishes.

@sallypup COPD always ends the same way sadly. And I am doing everything I can to help Yvonne stay off of an Oxygen machine for as long as she can.

@sallypup So do I. I must stop soon I think. Yvonne stopped a few years ago, if she hadn't I am not sure that she would still be here.

What a beautiful, honest snapshot of love and life you've shared. There’s a quiet power in the way you describe your journey. It says so much about the kind of relationship you built together

I'm sure your hubby was happy to get out and help as much as he could... Sometimes a body just doesn't feel like doing everything a person wants to do, no matter how much they want to do it.

@sallypup You're welcome. Taking naps is fine, as long as he has some energy after the naps. Try not to worry. If he can tell you're worrying about him, then he'll start worrying and we don't want him to worry more than necessary... Actually, we don't want you to worry, either.

@DaddyEvil Thank you. His Mom could be nasty mouthed and nagging when hubby was young. I try to curb my mouth partly cause it brings up bad times.

@DaddyEvil Thanks. Agreed- hubby eats a bowl of cereal in the morning then sleeps in his chair for a bit. Worries me but I can't do anything about it.

That was good that he wanted to be outside and help you. Everyone needs to feel needed. I'm glad he ate food, and cussed at the political mess our country is in...that's good that he has spirit! And I can simply shut my eyes and see and smell the blooms on the apple trees.

@sallypup When the trees have their blooms in the spring it seems to bring hope and promise. Sounds a bit sappy, but oh well...it does that for me!

@jstory07 The discrimination is atrocious. Hubby was 45 and earned a Masters degree before he got a decent job.

Although he inspired you when you were young it is surely you who inspires him now. It is good that you can do that for each other.
