A Freak Accident

This is about my daughters friends mother. She was cooking dinner (gas stove) when the sleeve of her shirt touched the flame and set it on fire. In a panic, she started flailing her arm which resulted in the whole sleeve igniting, the right side of her face and her hair being burned. She was rushed to the hospital with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and will be facing skin grafts and a pretty long recovery. I feel so bad for this poor lady and it must be extremely painful. I don't know what I would have done under the same circumstances but I would hope the I would have just put my arm under the sink and doused it with water. Hopefully it would have resulted in less severe burns. Goes to show that you never know from day to day (or moment to moment) how fast life can change. Maybe you could keep this lady in your thoughts and prayers

What a shame for the poor lady. I had never cooked on a gas stove until 4 years ago when we moved I to the house we are in now. I used to worry about all sorts of things going wrong whilst I was cooking including that which happened to the lady you are posting about. I worry about my wife using the gas stove all the time because she wears tops with sleeves all the time. So far nothing has happened I think if that happened to me I would be right to the cold tap and get the cold water on it. So sad something like that happened.

Hope your wife is very careful if she's cooking with sleeves. I never would have thought about this if this hadn't happened to my daughters friends mother

@Ineeddentures i prefer gas over electric stove too. I can sympathize with your wife not being able to stand for long periods. I can't either anymore. She's lucky to have you handle all the cooking

@Marilynda1225 She doesn't cook often. So that's a plus - she can't stand for long periods now. So I do most of the cooking. Cooking on a gas stove is much better in my opinion than electric cooker. But you can't set sleeves on fire with electric cooker.

Oh, my. And burns hurt SO terribly bad! Even on the rare occasion I do get a little cooking burn of some type, I head straight for the sink and the cold, cold water. Poor lady, I hope she isn't in terrible pain.

They have her on pain meds and it's going to be a pretty long recovery. I agree that those burns much be excruciating

@Marilynda1225 I hope she is getting good pain control. It's hard to heal when you hurt so much.

Oh, my goodness. How awful! I guess I would probably have done the same thing, but also run to the sink for water. Ugh! Burns must be awful. I will send some positive vibes that way.

Guess when we panic we don't think clearly. Its such a shame that she didn't run to the sink.

Oh my goodness, what a horrible accident. I think I would have just put my arm under the sink and doused it with water. My husband told me all the time not to wear shirts with sleeves that could be touched by the flames. No more gas here.

@Marilynda1225 - Poor woman I can imagine how much she is in pain. I badly burned the palm of my hand some years ago, I was in pain and it took forever to heal perfectly.

@LadyDuck I can't even imagine being burned as much as she is. Even the smallest burn is so painful. I pray that she gets better.

I think she got burned too fast so they had to call for an ambulance and rush her to the hospital

I feel like my first instinct would be to put my arm/sleeve which is burning under the tap, but when push comes to shove, I cannot say for sure that would be my first instinct. I will pray for her.

Guess when we panic we don't think clearly. I feel bad that she made the situation worse by flailing her arm and causing the fire to spread. She's lucky she didn't set the whole kitchen on fire

That's just awful. I think most people would tend to panic in such a situation. I have a fire blanket in a kitchen drawer but whether I had enough sense to grab it I don't know.

Poor lady, another reason not to like gas stoves.. I guess the moral of the story is if you catch your sleeve on fire, don't flail around

I hope she will recover pretty fast but with the 2-3 degree burns that's going to take awhile, my prayers are being sent for her recovery.
