The 1975 list doesn’t start until next week, but I get to “do the hustle” on you today with these songs! (By the way, “The Hustle” will not be on the 1975 list, early disclaimer.) Let’s get started with this great tune from 1965.
#5: Baby I’m Yours - Barbara Lewis
For some reason, John Prine named a character in one of his songs after Barbara Lewis. His particular character was someone who was a Quaalude-addicted Hare Krishna (“Come Back to Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard”). That has nothing to do with this song, although Prine did say he picked the name “Barbara Lewis” because of this singer.
As for Lewis herself, this was tied for her second-biggest hit (with “Make Me Your Baby,” both of which peaked at #11). Her biggest hit was “Hello Stranger,” which was remade in the 70s by Yvonne Elliman.
As for your “hustle,” this song was written by Van McCoy, best known for his 1975 instrumental dance hit “The Hustle.”
McCoy died in 1979 at the age of 39 from a heart attack. Lewis, 82, is still with us and occasionally making appearances to sing this and other classics.
