In Egyptian beliefs, the cat carried the divine essence of Bastet, the cat-headed goddess who represented domesticity, fertility, music, dance, and pleasure. It was believed that they had divine energy.
Cleopatra's cat was named Tivali, which means "gift of God".
In Ancient Egypt, cats were held in high esteem. Killing a cat, even by accident, was a serious crime punishable by death. Cats were considered sacred and even associated with deities.

I had heard that cats were held in high esteem. I just wrote about an island in Japan that has many cats living there and also called Cat Island,

I must admit that I hold Cats in quite high esteem. Cats are so clever. The Ancient Egyptians were obviously very clever people.

They are and the Egyptians were too. Very ahead of their time in many respects.
