Off house-sitting tomorrow

Tomorrow we leave to house-sit for our niece who is going overseas with her husband and four sons. It’s about 30 minutes away in a northern suburb so it won’t be hard to come home if we need something. We’ll be back here next week as we’re going on a bus with other village residents to Pinjarra south of Perth to attend a (horse) harness racing day. Lunch is included so we’re looking forward to that. We’ll have wifi and all mod cons at the next place although it’s a small house. My niece has some big empty pots and an empty vegetable garden so my first job is going to be to plant some vegetable seedlings for her. Hopefully, they’ll be close to maturity by the time she returns in early June. It would be a nice surprise if the plants all grow. The photo shows some vegetables I grew a few years back.

I hope the house sitting goes well and passes without incident. The Harness racing day sounds like a lot of fun. I had very little luck with growing vegetables, except for potatoes, but anyone at all can grow them. I hope your seedlings do well. And it would be a lovely surprise for your niece when she gets back if they all grew and matured properly.

I'm hoping the plants will thrive. They might all get eaten by bugs.

My mom used to say that leave the place more beautiful than when you come. This saying has become a part of us. I have lived in so many countries and places and always followed this. I have always left the houses with more plants and more clean than when I actually moved in. It was tough to leave the plants back, but I left with the faith that the new people moving in will take care of them.I have done that with all my rented places too. You are doing the same. I am sure that your niece will appreciate that.

With her four boys, she is very busy. She works part-time as an audiologist too. She loves her garden but doesn't have a lot of time to spend in it. I hope I can do some helpful work in it.

@arunima25 Yes, she's the one. We have a lot to do with her Dad and I'm hoping he might come up with other ideas how we can help. I know one verandah post needs refixing. That sounds within our 'range of skills'.

@JudyEv If I am not wrong, she is the one with autistic boys. That's very much understandable with her not being able to find time. She has a lot to care for on her plate. You are doing such a nice thing for her.

My dad tried to plant the vegetable in the pots but finally they were eaten by the worms. So now he plants the flowers and not vegetables

@JudyEv It seems worms can eat the vegetables easily. My dad tried some methods but it didn't work very well. So he had to change to plant something else at the end

Thanks for the kind words but I don't think we'll be going into business. It's not always that much fun.

At least this house-sit isn't way away from home for you and you're house-sitting for family. That has to be a plus! I'm sure you'll have few problems getting veggies to grow for your niece.

They are so fortunate to have you to help them, it's hard to find house-sitters that are trustworthy at times. I imagine you will have no problem and her little garden will be flourishing when she returns!

She was saying they didn't know what they'd do about the cats and guinea pigs so I offered to help. It won't hurt us. Later I had the idea of planting vegies for her.

@MarieCoyle I'm looking forward to planting some vegies. I just hope they grow. I'm trying not to get too excited in case the plants all die.

I am also planning to plant some vegetables in pots on our large balcony. Not many, but some fresh herbs and lettuce will be good.

@JudyEv - Parsley is every two years. I seeded coriander several times during the year.

@JudyEv - Parsley is not easy to grow, it is the same for coriander, it's always or too hot or too cold.

@LadyDuck It seems you have to plant new plants each season, especially with coriander.
