I guess a visit to the audiologist is not in order

I took a free hearing test last night through the AARP. I never had such a thing before. Usually hearing tests consist of those tones that you had to indicate whether you have heard or not. This test was having to pick spoken numbers out of alot of background noise. It was pretty hard to do however, my hearing up being in the normal range so that's a relief. Sometimes I find it a little hard to hear on the phone or when talking to certain people..but I think my hearing should stay good. Neither of my parents wear hearing aids..but they can't always hear everything.

I remember aguing with mom when she was 81 about getting a hearing aid but she kept telling me that she could hear just fine but I needed to speak up and not whisper. Elerly people are sometimes in denial and that puts a whole nother spin on the whole hearing thingy

True, but I don't notice any major problem with their hearing. It isn't like you need to yell at them. and they both carry on a normal phone conversation..Sometimes if you are behind them though they may not hear you.

My right ear drum has a hole in it and I have trouble hearing some people/some sounds on that side. It sounds like some people are whispering when they're talking normally if they're on my left side.

I do have tinnitus, and that can cause hearing loss.

@DaddyEvil Mine is more associated with a pulse, but doesn't happen all the time. My bro in law has it too

@snowy22315 I always hear what sounds like cicadas in my right ear. I mentioned that they were loud one day last summer and Pretty told me she couldn't hear any.

My dad wears hearing aids (not until he was 50 and insurance would pay), but that’s because he had ear infections at 17, his dad wouldn’t take him to the doctor, and his eardrums burst. I think my hearing is so good because my vision is so bad, and you know how our bodies compensate for our deficiencies.

That is true. I didn't realize your vision was bad. That sucks

@AmbiePam So, if you don't need glasses or contacts..it should be OK I would think, but maybe you can't get them after s procedure like that

I have the same problem, sometimes I find it a little hard to hear on the phone, but my hearing is still good. My Mom had haring aids and she pulled them out all the time pretending they were "annoying", so she did not hear the phone ringing when I called.

My wife Yvonne will not go for a hearing test.
But she should. Because she isn't hearing things properly. She says she has me to hear for her.
Glad to hear that your hearing is in the normal range .

I think the hearing was OK in both ears, but to me seemed better in the left.

Since you say you sometimes feel you have issues with hearing you should take care of that So far so good in my case

I had to go to an audiologist for a hearing test when I was in my 40's.
It was quite involved.
I was in a sound-proof room, a tiny one, and the audiologist was across the glass from me.
I had headphones on, and had to indicate when and which ear I would hear a sound from.
I, thankfully, did not need hearing aids either, glad that you do not.

Yes, that is the traditional way the test is performed.

I'm very thankful for my hearing aids, but it's still very difficult at times. Glad you don't need them.
I'm too old to learn sign language, plus I don't know anyone who does!

You trust the AARP results enough to not go see an audiologist?

I do, I don't think I have any real trouble hearing. I just wanted to check it because I could. I hear the important things.
