I have a pitbull. She's the sweetest, most affectionate, most protective dog I have ever known. She would die for me and my family. She is very friendly, but she does have a natural instinct to hunt down any animal no matter how big. Any dog can be a threat, my neighbor for example got bite by a small breed. The most important thing is being a responsible pet owner, knowing their natural instincts, honing them, but in a non destructive way, and making them a part of your family from the beginning. Our baby girl has been shown alot of affection from day one and I think that has helped her immensly.

Pit bulls are unsafe only when they have been raised by irresponsibly. You can make any breed 'mean' by chaining them up and ignoring them. The pit bulls that I have had experiences with are the biggest babies in the world. They think that they're lap dogs.

I believe any animal can be a problem or unsafe not just pitbulls. I completely agree with you it's the way they are raised. They may have some instincts that may cause them to be dog agressive but in general they are not human aggressive. I feel that pit owners are almost forced into being extra careful because of the bad stigma that goes along with them. I know when I got my pittie when she was just 7 weeks old I let her see everything. I took her to tailgate parties and everything just so she would never have a problem with anyone. Now that she is full grown I still see people having a problem with her when I walk her. She is well trained and walks with me on a leash with no problems but I still see people walk on the other side of the road just to avoid us. My biggest problem now is that I am trying to move and I am having a huge problem finding a place because most places have a special clause saying that they dont accept dogs that are puts, rotties or similar breeds which I think is ridiculous. Good pitbulls come from good owners and bad pitbulls come from bad owners-shame there's been too many bad ners to ruin it for the good ones.

Pitt Bull - I am sorry you will be afraid of me in a few months.
A dog's breed does not guarantee any specific temperament, appearance, or behavior - even if the dog is purebred. Each and every dog is an individual, a product of genetics and environment - both of which are strongly influenced by owners and breeders. Your dog is what you make of it. It is every dog owner's duty to raise, train, and manage their dog appropriately. Dog ownership is a privilege and a responsibility that must be taken seriously. This is especially true for pit bulls, whose current sorry situation is the result of gross human incompetence and ignorance, both at the hands of bad owners and among the general public. I have owned Pitt Bulls all of my life and they have all been loving, sweet, and obedient dogs. I have raised them with my children with no fear what so ever.
